Technology is the use of science in industry, engineering, to invent useful things or to solve problems (Merriam-Webster.com, 2013). The ability to direct and control the flow of materials through, and across national borders can be a difficult task; technology has helped to ease the difficulty of this task and to assist management with improving the flow of these materials. One example of how technology is improving the management of the marijuana supply chain is the use of the Marijuana Inventory Tracking System (MITS), marijuana will be legal to sell in the state of Colorado on Jan 1, 2014. Colorado will be using MITS to monitor the whereabouts of the marijuana plants and products to regulate and ensure products come from authorized sources. The use of RFID tags that are attached to each plant and processed marijuana package helps the state monitor that the products are coming from authorized growers and distributors and not from a clandestine source. In this case, technology will help to improve the logistical management of marijuana distribution at a state level. Imagine the logistics of trying to conduct this same operation at the global level, let’s look at some other examples on how technology can improve the management of global logistics.
Businesses are trending toward the use of cloud computing to assist them with many aspects of their operations. Cloud computing consists of a pay-per use or subscription service to the internet (real time), thus extending the use of a business’s information technology’s capabilities.
