Technology has become a need instead of a privilege in our lives. The internet is the heart of the world, pumping information into our brains. Although, technology has been resourceful; in today’s society it should not be depended on. In 2010, 28% of citizens in the United States stated they wouldn’t be able to live without high-speed internet. Technology in today’s time period has begun and already has taken over the lives of individuals. In addition, there are about two billion TV sets and one billion computers in use. Thus, the average American household uses 10.6 mega watt-hours electricity per year. Also, there are 160 billion emails that are sent daily even though 97% of which are only spam messages. As a result, nine out of 1,000 computers have been infected with spam. Technology is taking over any object and every person. Skills that every human being needs is being destroyed or replaced. For example, Amazon.com is now selling more “e-books” than printed books. Therefore, our society is going downhill with new advancements. The Director of the Children Digital Media Center, Patricia Greenfield concluded, “Reading for pleasure is the key to developing these skills. Students today have more visual literacy and less print literacy. Many students do not read for pleasure and have not for decades.” Because of technology, our skills in critical thinking and analysis have decreased, while the visual skills we withhold have improved. If you had the choice between your phone and a book,you would probably without thinking grab your phone. But what if you knew that reading is crucial to a future. In “Reading for pleasure Is in Painful Decline” by Stephen L. Carter and “Twilight of the books” by Caleb Crain, both authors argue about the state of reading in The United States. Within both passages they give valid points as to why and how the state of reading are negatively affecting the country. Stephen L. Carter represents how the decline in reading for fun is the main concern, while on the other hand, Caleb Crain shows it’s technology and social media that actually are the main contributors.
However, Carr and Turkle both agree that technology has done good, but it has come at the cost of our ability to think critically. In the two articles, both authors heavily emphasize the negative effects of computer technology on how it is diminishing human cognition and the ability to process information.
In Kouider Mohktari’s “The Impact of Internet and Television Use on the Reading Habits and Practices of College Students”, he and two other authors (Carla A. Reichard and Anne Gardner) briefly argue and discuss how technology (like television and the internet) affects how the American adult reads. They went further into the subject and decided to study the reading habits of college students in the education system of today. There haven’t been many studies on the habits of college students, which is one reason why Mokhtari decided to study it. The reading skills of Americans are decreasing as each year passes. While I am a very avid user of the internet, and I do watch quite a bit of television, I also spend a fair amount of time reading.
First, he provides an overview of the history and development of the book as well as the development of reading. Carr analyzes and explains the effects of these developments on the individuals. Furthermore, he notes that the Internet recreates and alters a medium’s content by the use of hyperlinks, which ultimately distracts readers, and by separating the content into organized chunks. These characteristics make the content “searchable” which stimulates skimming behavior or superficial reading. As a result, readers retain less information due to the lack of deep, analytical reading. In addition, online texts often incorporate opinions, beliefs, or skewed viewpoints of certain topics, which can have negative effects on readers. Carr also addresses that some opponents believe that hardcopy reading was a result of “impoverished access” (111) and that the desire to use the fast paced web is a result of a quickening pace of life and work over the past few

The topic of technology and our society has become a very controversial subject today. Many people believe that technology is an essential component of our modern world, helping us to improve communication from farther distances as well as giving us easy access to important information. On the other hand, there is the opinion that too much technology is affecting social interactions and our basic development. “Technology…is a queer thing, it brings you great gifts with one hand, and stabs you in the back with the other.” (Carrie Snow.) The CBC Documentary “Are We Digital Dummies” displayed the pros and cons when it comes to modern technology that we use in the western world everyday.

After the discovery of North America, founded by Christopher Columbus, people have become fixated on “The New World.” It allowed people to advance towards better opportunities and to start new beginnings. With the rising growth of technology, it has become an efficient, purposeful manipulation of the now material world. It is power that is applied through a machine or tool to perform a certain skill or technique. The United States, compared to other countries in the world, have the greatest standard of living with its accessible technologies. It is also important to teach students reading is everywhere and it will follow them the rest of their life. As educators, we need to help students enjoy reading and develop a love for it that will last forever. It is our role to therefore provide the best instruction possible and use assessment that allows children to succeed. Most importantly, as life long learners ourselves, we need to strive to make sure that our students become and stay life long learners.
Computers or technology in general is advancing more and more every day, it’s becoming increasingly helpful. We as humans are becoming increasing dependent on a number of things like smart phones, tablets, and computers. Things could be completely different if we were to lose everything tomorrow. Many good things could come out of us losing everything, but mostly bad things due to the fact that were so dependent on everything.
