Nowadays it's hard to find kids without an iPad let alone teens with no phone. This all started in 1973 when Motorola introduced the flip phone to the world. After that the world was never the same, not only has the mobile phone affected grown-ups but it has affected teens the most. Surprisingly more than 50 % of teens agree on being addicted to their phones ( Joyce 1). Therefore the question simply remains Are teenagers distracted by technology? Teens are the next generation of this world, and they are being dragged one by one by the leash of technology. From playing games to texting their friend's teens are undoubtedly getting affected by technology. The new handheld devices have transformed everyone's life, and they have changed anything from a child's relationship with his parents to even people socializing, and especially with the teens ability to stay on task. With technology in teens lives, it has harmed them in ways that the world would never have imagined in the past decade, and it's tricky for teens to find boundaries for their social life, and their real life (Joyce 1). This is so, as teens nowadays are more reluctant to go have fun with their friends regardless of them talking with them every day, and they would much rather just stay home and play on their devices or Playstations. This is so, as teens describe video games as “fun” and some even surprisingly say that they feel more connected to their friends online rather than in real life ( Chang). As a matter of fact, teens can be too distracted at times to an extent where they can step in a street of ongoing traffic without realizing. This has been an issue for so long that these people have been described as “zombies” (people who are distracted with their phones and don’t focus on the roads.) now the government in the Netherlands are planning to make a program that they feel may help the “zombies” in a sense that there will be little to no accidents because of phones and more specifically people who don't pay attention to the streets. The thing that the Government in the Netherlands is planning to do is implement LED lights that match the traffic signals exactly on the sidewalk in front of the traffic lights of the street. Some people, however, aren’t liking this idea and are calling it rewarding bad habits, but according to the Safety Administration, 4,355 people were killed crossing the streets because they weren't paying enough attention to traffic (“Dutch Town Aims” 1). This is all due to the new games and applications on the phone and surprisingly teens even admit that most of their time is spent on applications like Snapchat, WhatsApp, and even Instagram. Leading to that point around seventy-six percent of teens around the world use social media and are all just glued to their phone screens and are somewhat “ addicted to their phones” ( Lenhart).
