In a technological driven world technology is becoming something that kids, at younger and younger ages, are turning to. In some people 's eyes they are becoming addicted to technology and in others views technology is not a problem with our youth. Parents and most adults are all worried about this, so to try and give some insight to these worried parents and adults Chris Bergman and Dannah Boyd wrote articles that discuss the use of technology by the youth of today. Boyd uses different rhetorical strategies to try and get her point across in her article, that different societal factors is actually what the problem with teens and not technology, “Blame Society, Not The Screen Time.” However, Chris Bergman’s “Don’t Limit Your Teen’s Screen Time” …show more content…
This is also true when people read books and articles. Boyd tries to bring about some emotional feeling at the end of her article when she writes, “We’re raising our children in captivity and they turn to technology to socialize, learn and decompress. Why are we blaming the screens?” Yes, this does make the audience feel something, but not what she wants them to feel. Boyd’s audience, after reading this quote, feels bad. Again she makes them feel as if they are not raising their kids right and as I said earlier this might not be the approach she wanted to take. Contrary to this bad feeling, Bergman gives his audience a sense of gratitude when he talks about the different tools and skills that technology is teaching teens and also what it taught him growing up. Bergman claims technology taught him, “how to tell stories, create worlds, and even how to save and spend money.” This statement further helps his argument because it gives parents a positive reason to look at when thinking about technology. If they see that it is actually providing their kids with something they can use as they grow older then parents will be more inclined to allow it because parents want their children to be as successful as they can be which in turn makes them feel good about what they are choosing to
In the passionate article, “The Digital Parent Trap” by the renowned Eliana Dockterman, the author convincingly portrays that there are benefits to early exposure to technology and that this viewpoint needs to be more pervasive or else there would be a severe problem with broad consequences. The author effectively and concisely builds the argument by using a variety of persuasive and argumentative rhetorical techniques including but not limited to the usage of ethos, evidence, and pathos.
Both authors are writing to parents of children who they think spend way too much time on their electronics. However, Dana Boyd has a much better compelling argument for not restricting a teenager’s screen time. Boyd has a much better appeal to both audiences. She manages to employ better uses of both pathos and logos throughout the article and appeals to both parents and children.
Ray Bradbury states “We bombard people with sensation. That substitutes for the thinking.” I agree with this statement because with all the technology and entertainment the 21st century offers where has the thinking and investigating gone? In his book Fahrenheit 451, his words manifest a horrible time where important writings from philosophers, playwrights, and authors are censored and almost everyone is solely focused on all the mind-numbing technology around them. In another article titled, “Study explores how Internet, technology affect young people” by Michael Abernethy, a survey explores how these machines could affect the future generations in negative way by being raised in their presence. I understand that technology is helpful and makes life a lot easier but becoming too reliant on it will weaken the ability to think freely and stopping us from seeing the real meaning in knowledge.
John Horvat II, from “Five Ways Technology Is Taking Over Your Life,” is an illustrator, researcher, international speaker, and a contributor to “The Blaze” website, and also an author of books. The main point from this article is that technology is a bigger problem now, technology is supposed to be a beneficial resource but not to the point that we get handled by it. The author strongest asset is the use of pathos to get to the audience emotions and make them believe that he’s right. The audience of this article are people who use technology in an excessive way, which is majority of the people, so he is basically referring to everyone who have a relationship with technology.
He brings up the example, “Why do so many Americans say they want their children to watch less TV, yet continue to expand the opportunities for them to watch it?” This not only points out the original thread of thinking he was raised on clashing with society’s norms today, it also brings into play his use of rhetorical questions. By using rhetorical questions such as the one previously stated as well as, “More importantly, why do so many people no longer consider the physical world worth watching?” This continues to reinforce his use of the guilty tone to make readers reflect on how technology is replacing
We live in a time where technology is at the center of our society. We use technology on a daily basis, for the simplest tasks, or to aid us in our jobs, and don’t give a second thought to whether these tools are actually helping us. Writers such as Kevin Kelly and Clive Thompson argue that the use of technology actually helps us humans; whiles writers such as Nicholas Carr argue that technology affects people’s abilities to learn information negatively.
“It encourages affirmation or rejection of our feelings” (Rosen). “The tools we use to think change the way in which we think” (Turkle). This point that Sherry Turkle made in her article is true, in a way. Computers do things for us and for us, that is also true. Some people like to blame technology for a lot of things and they could be in the right or in the wrong for it.
Are technology and the media shedding the very fabric of the existence we have known? As technology and the media spread their influence, the debate over the inherent advantages and disadvantages intensifies. Although opinions vary widely on the subject, two writers offer similar views: Professor Sherry Turkle, director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self, in her article “Can You Hear Me Now” and Naomi Rockler-Gladen, who formerly taught media studies at Colorado State University, with her article “Me Against the Media: From the Trenches of a Media Lit Class.” Turkle asserts that technology has changed how people develop and view themselves, while at the same time affecting their concepts of time management and focus (270). Similarly, Rockler-Gladen believes media and its inherent advertising have had a profound effect on the values and thinking of the public (284). I could not agree more with Professor Turkle and Ms. Rockler-Gladen; the effects technology and media have worried and annoyed me for quite so time. The benefits of technology and media are undeniable, but so then are the flaws. People are beginning to shift their focus away from the physical world to the virtual world as they find it easier and more comfortable. The intended purpose of technology and media was to be a tool to improve the quality of life, not shackles to tie people to their devices. I no longer recognize this changed world and long for the simple world of my youth.
Having a dependence on technology is like having an addiction to a drug. One relies on it to make them feel a certain way but it can totally change one’s emotions, feelings, actions and personality. Being dependent on technology can make one more agitated and lazy because the one might feel that they are not expected to do a regular task because they have machines to do them for them. Trying to stay away from the technology might tear one apart because of how attached they are to it and make one more upset. This passage from the book, The Veldt demonstrates being upset or emotionally changed from technology, “Can’t say I did; the usual violences, a tendency toward slight paranoia here or there. But this is usual in children because they feel their parents are always doing things to make them suffer in one way or another. But, oh, really nothing.” Page 9. When the father threatened turning off all the technology, the son’s personality totally changed. He got violent and started yelling at his parents, he used to actually address his parents with a “hi”. After the incident, he started threatening to kill his parents. Peter and Wendy actually think of the death of parents which explains why the nursery always shows Africa and killings. As disclosed in the article, The Impact of Technology on the Developing Child, Chris Rowan acknowledges, “Rather than hugging, playing, rough housing, and conversing with children, parents are increasingly resorting to providing their children with more TV, video games, and the latest iPads and cell phone devices, creating a deep and irreversible chasm between parent and child” (par. 7). A silent menace is creeping into the lives of America’s youth. It can be found on the streets. This addiction-creating snare is passed around at the movie theater when nobody seems to be watching. Paranoid teenagers sneak time in with it in school bathrooms and parking lots. Once-innocent kids are fully ensnared until the early hours of morning. Their red eyes and blank stares note a problem, but only after it is discovered, it is too late. This menace is not reefer or any other drug. It is technology, a new threat. No field advances as rapidly as technology. The newest iPhones and tablets are being introduced into many individuals’ work and personal lives. The most natural progression seems to be the integration of and focus upon technology in public schools. However, a hasty transition into a tech world may be dangerous.
