There are many people all over the world who enjoy hunting and fishing. Hunters around the world find themselves in a taxidermist shop at some point in their lives. The reason being that they just got a trophy, a really good looking unique creature that instead of letting go to waste, they would like to hang on their wall or sit on a table or stand. In order to fully enjoy the beauty in a mount, one must understand the work that goes into making these creatures a permanent resident within a home. Taxidermy by definition is the art of preparing, stuffing, and mounting the skins of animals with life-like effects. Taxidermists skillfully mount large and small animals in a certain way according to the option of the hunter or the fishermen. around the world getting unique animals and bringing the animals back to their home. Most of the animals died on the trip and they didn't want that to be the end of the animal. The Europeans knew how to preserve skin and so that is what they did; thus the beginning of what is now called taxidermy. Taxidermy was first used in museums to show the beauty an animal could offer even after death. Some big game hunters became the vogue of the aristocracy and through this some taxidermy firms became international, like Rowland Ward of London and Nairobi ("A Brief History of Taxidermy"). Clark 2 There is not a set educational requirement one must meet to become a taxidermist.
A taxidermist could go to school to get an associate’s degree, but it is not necessarily needed. Taxidermist must have a legal license available to show if necessary. Montgomery Community College offers the education/training needed to become a licensed taxidermist. Taxidermists have to have a strong stomach, ready to get dirty, and must have patience. In becoming a taxidermist, having experience is the key to success. One may go to school and take some classes on how to be a successful taxidermist and although you don’t have to, in some cases one will learn more tricks of the trade than one ever would have thought they could. It may take as little as a year or less to become a taxidermist. On the other hand, it may take up to four or five years to become a taxidermist. It depends on the taxidermist and what that taxidermist wants to be mounting (“Taxidermist Job Description, Career as a Taxidermist, Salary, Employment- Definition and Nature of the Work, Education and Training Requirements, Getting the
Job”). The daily duties of a taxidermist may add up to be a fairly long list. The taxidermist must first meet with a client and discuss how the client wants the animal mounted, how much it will cost, and how long it will take before the client will get it back. One must measure the neck right behind the ears to get a good measurement on how big the animal is going to be. Then one must freeze the animal hide to kill the ticks that are still on the hide. After the hide is frozen fully, one may take the hide out, of the freezer and let it thaw back out. Next one will use a scalpel blade to cape out the hide, also known as ‘’cleaning all the meat off of the hide.’’ The hide must be tanned before it is put on the animal form. When tanning the hides they must go into a pickle Clark 3 solution; this will make the hide last longer. The form/mold must then be covered with clay; after the form is covered then the hide needs to be put on the form. Then onemust put the glass eyes in forms allotted eye sockets and paint the animal’s noise. Small touches such as this will bring the animal to life. The mount must have time to dry complete before the client comes to pick it up. It will take two to three days for the mount to completely dry. Taxidermist hours vary depending on if one works alone or if one works with a company. A taxidermist’s average salary is $30,000 to about $40,000 a year (“McKenzie 800”). Walt Fulps is a taxidermist, fishing guide, and outdoorsman who was interviewed about his taxidermy career. When Walt Fulps was first getting started, it was nothing more than a hobby but soon developed into a career. Fulps said “the part that he likes most about his job is the artistic part of each project.” What he dislikes about his job is customers who come in with an animal to be mounted and they can't afford to pay for the mount. Fulps said “that the most challenging part about the career was the customers.” Fulps said “cut the expectation level in half.” The customer will call and ask or drop by the shop of the taxidermist to see if the their mount is ready to be picked up. He works seven days a week sometimes. He’s also self -employed so he can take time off from work anytime. Walt Fulps also said “this career isn’t really a business, it is more a job. The customers are buying into you not a brand name. Fulps is glad he is a taxidermist; he really enjoys it (“Interview with a Taxidermist”). A taxidermist may work year round or have a seasonal work schedule. He or she may also be super successful or go down in flames all by the way they approach their customers and the quality of their work. It truly all depends on the individual and how much they really truly Clark 4 want to be successful in this business. It can be a fun career and a career that tests your character and the work ethic one has. Final advice for going into this career would be to go to school for it so that one would already have the background experience, knowledge and skills to go into this career and be as successful as possible.
