While watching the three videos I noticed that tap dancing is more cheerful, fast-paced, and requires more foot/ankle work. The videos all displayed the tappers doing insane stunts (or at least for me). The rhythm was not repetitive. Each step had a different unique sound. The body positions were everywhere they would move all around the room. The tappers would stand still, they were constantly moving around. As for the level of difficulty in my opinion all the moves shown in the videos are challenging. The differences I observed were that all of these videos showed a different style of tap dance. While, the Nicholas Brothers in Stormy Weather displayed a classical tap. This kind of tap means that the dance consists of ballet, tap, and jazz …show more content…
with acrobatics. The Nicholas Brothers were famously known for their killer tapping skills and crazy stunts. Their style contained upper-body movement as well as intense leg movements. As for the dancing style in the Bill Bo Jangles and Shirley Temple it would be considered as musical or Broadway tap. This style of tap is also known as “show” tap. Musical/Broadway tap combines Hollywood with traditional forms of tap. While, the focal point in this style of tap is performance and body formations. However, the tap dance video, Savion Glover-Dancing with the Stars is considered as hoofing. Hoofing is a lifestyle that emphasizes on stomping and clumping along to the rhythmic sounds of the music. Savion Glover was also known as the greatest hoofer of all time. Another difference I found was that not all of the videos were accompanied by a jazz musician (except Shirley Temple’s video). Yes, throughout the years tap dance has evolved.
According to dancemotionusa.org tap dance originated from the West African dances and certain influences from the British Isles. All throughout the 20th century tap dance began to gain popularity. It seems that tap dance started as something that slaves did to express themselves. Dancemotionusa.org stated that, “White slave masters banned the use of drums, which they considered a tool for organizing revolution. This led to people into making rhythms with their bodies-specifically, their feet.” Another way we know that tap dance has evolved is that before they would attach pennies to their heels and soles in order to retain the rhythmic sounds of their dance (pg.81). Now, tap shoes have a metal attached to the heel. Tappers do not have to attach pennies to the bottom of their shoes anymore. Tap dance has also adapted new moves and expanded into other forms of dance. An example, countless of people have combined ballet and tap dance together—creating a flawless routine. In addition, some of today’s upcoming tappers are: Michelle Dorrance, Anthony Morigerato, Daniel Leveille, Aaron, Alexis, and Curtis. Overall, tap dancing has come a long way and in my opinion it has not lost its meaning. Well, tap dancing is not just dancing. It is a form of dancing. While, most people think that tap dancing is not emotional, on the contrary tappers express themselves through their footwork. The heel of the tapper’s shoes act as a drum, creating
a unique sound. Tappers have the freedom of creating their own beats and stomps. In conclusion, tap dancing is about expressing yourself through rhythmic sounds of the music.
The next work of the program, Courtly Airs and Dances, is a multi-movement work composed by Ron Nelson. The piece is split into six movements: Intrada, Basse Danse, Pavane, Saltarello, Sarabande, and Allemande. Each of these present distinct characteristics that separate it from each other movement, yet all are united by being a style of dance. The first movement, Intrada, presents a fanfare-like opening to the multi-movement work. The trumpets and brass section as a whole lead this, as they create a sense of nobility. The key is major and the tempo is one that could be described as allegretto—it is not a fast tempo, yet more brisk than an andante pace. The texture is homophonic, as there are different parts being performed by different
The fast foot work in both Black Bottom and in tap dancing showed the similarities of the styles of dance. Although tap dance is less about the upper body, unlike Black Bottom and dances like the Charleston, and more about the movement of the feet and sound of the taps, there were obvious similarities between Black Bottom and tap. Tap dance and Black Bottom are fairly similar, only by adding metal plates to the bottom of shoes, creating “tap shoes”, the new style of dance was born. This style of dance however, focusing on the lower body movements and the sounds the tao shoes are making when they stick across the floor, is less about the movement of the arms and upper
The dance that I will be focusing on is entitled: thinking sensing standing feeling object of attention. The dance, to me, symbolizes the socialization of persons in Western civilization concerning gender roles. In the beginning there are gestures that are separated from emotion and full-embodiment, but as the dance progresses the gestures become more meaningful and recognizable. The lighting starts out very specific and narrow, then the light encompasses the entire stage, and eventually the dancers are silhouetted as they return to a familiar movement motif in the end. The music is mainly instrumental with occasional soft female vocals, and the lyrics suggest emotion, which is interesting because the dancers do not convey emotion until the end of the dance. Also, the showing of emotion is directly proportional to how much clothing the dancers have on at specific points in the dance.
Irish Step Dance is a percussive style of dance that comes from traditional Irish dance. It has fast paced intricate foot work with a ridged upper body. Riverdance is a performance of Irish Step Dancing that really got Irish Step Dancing recognized by the world.

Music is a big part of our lives, it’s in everything whether it be dance, film, ads and much more. But music isn’t just sound, most famous artists produce films for their music to show the artists interpretation of the lyrics and/or music and this is called a music video. These music videos can range from animation to dance to short films and can have a very big budget.
The style of tap dance that a person may be more used to will depend on their location. The Jazz Tap style and the Buck and Wing tap style are primarily performed in Africa. The clog tap dance style is mainly performed in Britain and Ireland. Broadway and Rhythm tap is performed in the United States of
Dance is a type of sport that usually involves movement of the body, often carried out to different types of music depending on the style. Dance is practiced in many cultures as a form of expression or social relations in a spiritual or performance setting, and is even used to express certain beliefs and ideas. Dance does not have traceable roots and it is not possible to say when exactly dance became a part of culture, but historical evidence shows that dance has been an important aspect of rituals, services, revels, and entertainment since the ancient developments. Since dance was discovered, it has become prevalent. Many different forms and styles of dance are used all around the world today including ballet, swing, hip-hop, and even the tango and salsa.
Tap dancing is one of the most interesting dances to me. As a child I can recall watching movies with my grandparents and being amazed by the way shoes can produce a pattern of sound that is almost musical. For this journal I enjoyed taking a trip down memory lane enjoying the videos from Fred Astaire clear through to Sammy Davis Jr. It is so hard to choose just the one artist from all of the great dancers, I decided to go with Fred Astire. The title of the musical is " Puttin on the Ritz ,http://my.mail.ru/mail/dostali312xyu/video/52/161.html?time=0&from=videoplayer. Fred Astaire performed a contemporary tap dance which he choregraphed himself. The tapping coming from the shoes balances in between the words of the song, bit by bit it builds up to a full dance routine. The sound of what is called tap dancing comes from the feet and shoes the dance itself come with the whole body. It is a combination of high energy includind; swinging, swaying and bending of the upper body, kicking and jumping from the legs, also movement from the head. I had my pick of many sole video performances or duets he danced in with other great dancers but I chose "Puttin on the Ritz" because Fred is dancing with many other dancers. When performimg any dance routine perfection is important, when doing a duet both dancers have to be in the same step. Towards the end this peice shows how imperitive it to be in the same timing with
I recently tried to see a live belly dance at Aladdin Mediterranean Restaurant in West Reading. Growing up, I always thought about belly dancing as the stereotypical Eyptian woman dancing sexually in front of a group of men. Even in class when I first found out that we were going to learn about Egypt, one thing came to mind, and that was belly dancing. I was surprised by the fact that belly dancing is not anything like what I thought it was. It was quite different and astonishing of the differences there was between the real thing and what I thought it was. One of the things that really got to me is that in the western hemisphere, we call all of Egyptian dances as belly dancing, when in reality, there are multiple types of dances. This is
In the American Sign Language video "Sorenson Video Relay Service", a little girl named Christina talks about how she is nine and a half years old and goes to a school for the deaf. During the whole video she talks about how the videophone help her and her family communicate with family and friends. Additionally, the video helps explain why so many deaf people rely on videophone and the video relay service to help them communicate with hearing people.
Suddenly, the end of the year sneaks up on you. This time of the year is always so busy (in a good way) and packed to the brim with craziness. At the end of the year we wrote folklore stories, and four of them were turned into plays. I was in one about the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team. My character had a mustache that unexpectedly fell off during the play. I improvised and said that I had shaved. There also were mini acts between each play where people could showcase a talent. I performed a comedy act, that everyone loved. After the plays, our class went out for fro-yo at Yummie’s. One fundraising event that we do at Martha Brown is red Nose Day, where you can buy a red nose for a dollar, which is donated to help stop child poverty. Then, another
When VH1 got a panel of “music industry experts” together to decide on a list of the greatest music videos ever, it was Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice” that was the video of choice. Close behind on the list were videos for songs such as Madonna’s “Vogue” and Jackson’s “Thriller.” It seems to me that there is a significant theme all of these videos share…DANCE!
I have always been interested in dance and I find the different techniques that come with each style fascinating. One thing I have learned that amazes me about tap is that artist created their own style and they find a niche that allows them to stand out from the rest. Paul Draper was definitely one of a kind and he thought outside of the box to create a style of his own. His style was unique because usually tap music is jazzy and upbeat, he took two different types of dance and merged them together. Using classical music and ballet techniques he changed the way people viewed tap, he also changed the mood and the sound. By this I mean when you usually watch a tap performance, you listen to the rhythm of the taps and music, but because Draper
To many, dance is only an art. In reality, dance is much more. It 's an art, a sport, a way to express one’s self, a way to exercise, a way to get feelings out. Since the beginning of time, humans have used different types of dance to express themselves. There are many advantages to dancing, however there are also some disadvantages. Dance is one of the most physically and cognitively demanding sports.
