It is a delight to see how the school fosters a love of learning in its children right at the start of their educational journey. The kids are excellent communicators, creative souls, and beautiful orators. The Balancing Act of a Momprenuer Talking about the equal importance of work and family, she seems to have successful attained a balance between the two. While it is a common sight to see mothers juggling their professional lives with motherhood tasks, it’s all positive and good for this Momprenuer. Kathy Harrison starts her personal story happily married to her childhood sweet heart Bruce. Kathy was living a simple life in her rural Massachusetts community home as the loving mother of three smart, kind, well-adjusted boys Bruce Jr., Nathan, and Ben. With the natural transitions of family life and the changes that come with career and moving, she went back to work as a Head Start teacher. Her life up until the acceptance of that job had been sheltered an idyllic. Interacting in a world of potluck suppers, cocktail parties, and traditional families had nothing in common with the life she would choose after she became a Head Start teacher.
There was an article entitled why woman can’t have it all, and our readings that stated women struggle to both work and be a great mom. Kim is fortunate, being able to continue her job while working from home, so she is there to experience being a full time mom, but Kim also gets to work and make her own money as well. Kim’s family is a traditional family in a sense, with Aden’s father going to work daily away from the house, and his mom being home with him, but my aunt is working from home as well. Kim will be the first to tell you it is not easy being a great wife, mom, employee and keeping up the house chores, but she will also be the first to tell you how rewarding it is for her to balance all her hats. Comparing Kim to what we learned in class, she has many similarities and differences to our lectures. One example is how she spends more time on housework than her significant other, and also works which does not appear to affect her marital relationship or her child. Sometimes I can see role strain with her, especially when she gets busy at the end of the month, but she is great at balancing everything and doing what is important first, realizing her most important roles are mommy, wife, employee, and then homemaker. As more and more women continue to move into the workplace, hot debate has arisen surrounding the issues of work and family balance. Many female managers and professionals with young families are leaving the fast track for what has become known as the “mommy track.” Today, as young people are applying for jobs, many now take into consideration a company’s values of a work and life balance. Some say that the pressures of maternity are becoming an obstacle for many women who wish to continue their climb up the corporate ladder. Often times when women become pregnant, they are forced to abandon their careers. Therefore, the following question has aroused many controversial arguments: can women obtain high standards of success in their careers and maintain the best possible home life?
One of the many challenges that working women face is the strain between how to become successful in the workplace as well as being a great mother and wife at home. Hochschild examines the revolution of the american women and their changing role in the workforce. She states that over the past 30 years more and more women are beginning to work outside of the household. She notices how although there have been changes in the way that women are seen inside the workforce, the thought still remains that the woman's place is in the home. Although number of women joining the workforce have doubled over the years, the stigma of being a housewife and taking care of the home is still placed on women today. Hochschild does what no one else has cared to do and that is give working mothers a voice and choosing to tell their story. By doing this she has defied the odds that are placed against working women and speak up for the injustices against working mothers. At times jobs are keeping parents away from families. In the articles,” Double Daddy”, by Penny Parker,” Diary of a Mad Blender”, by Sue Shellenburger, and The Childs view of Working Parents” by Cora Daniels and Ellen Galinksy, the writers informs us that parents struggle to balance the responsibilities of work and families. While integrating time to an efficient expense of equality time spent with family, through goals, obligations and priorities. The main thing that all 3 of the authors revels is priorities/struggles, goals, and balancing responsibilities. Balancing responsibilities, goals, and a personal life is a struggle for many people, but the most important priorities in life, such as family, should not be neglected.
Stone (2007) conducted “extensive, in depth interviews with 54 women in a variety of professions-law, medicine, business, publishing, management consulting, nonprofit administration, and the like- living in major metropolitan areas across the country, half of them in their 30’s, half in their 40’s” (p. 15). Keep in mind these women Stone (2007) focuses on are “highly educated, affluent, mostly white, married women with children who had previously worked as professionals or managers whose husbands could support their being at home” (p. 14). Her findings revealed women are strongly influenced by two factors: workplace push and motherhood pull. “Many workplaces claimed to be “family friendly” and offered a variety of supports. But for women who could take advantage of them, flexible work schedules (which usually meant working part time) carried significant penalties” (Stone, 2007, p. 16). This quote represents the workplace push, where women are feeling encouraged to continue their rigorous careers with little to no family flexibility being offered from workplaces. In a society with the muajority of mothers joining or returning to the workforce, there is a growing body of research documenting the demands placed on these women and what can be done to help their transition into this new role. According to the United States’ Department of Labor, in the year 2012, 70.5% of mothers with children under the age of 18 were a part of the workforce; of these women 73.7% were employed full-time, working over 35 hours a week, and 26.3% were employed part-time, working less than 35 hours a week (United States Department of Labor, 2012). Given this information, it is becoming more important to further research how this new role as an employee affects the role of parenting and what can be done to help this transition. The intent of this paper is to compare the experiences of a working mother to the current research on the topic of working mothers. Moreover, this paper addresses the demands placed on working mothers as well as the factors that ameliorate their transition into this new role.
As large numbers of married couples work outside the home and have parenting responsibilities, their multiple roles have grown. Therefore, the combination of work and family roles generates a spillover of stress in these two areas. Balancing work and family is both a female and male issue. The demands of work pull them away from family intimacy, while the demands of family pull them in. Either extreme can be problematic for individuals and their intimate relationships.
Along these two weeks we have been prompt to make a recall to our own way of learning and why we became a teacher: Was it because coincidence, due to life circumstances, maybe because family tradition, was it a conscious decision or because someone influenced us? Whatever the answer is, we have to face reality and be conscious that being a teacher does not only means to teach a lesson and asses students learning. It requires playing the different roles a teacher must perform whenever is needed and required by our learners, identify our pupils needs and preferences, respecting their integrity and individuality but influencing and motivating them to improve themselves and become independent.
When I was growing up, I remember attending elementary school, learning a new language seems to be difficult at first, but I was able to learn the English language because of the dedication of one of my teachers. Now, as I reflect on this experience, it is obvious that she was dedicated and enjoyed teaching her students to be successful. I know today that she made a difference in my life as I navigated through my education experience and high school years to present.
Regardless of where they are in their careers, working mothers have a tough time achieving balance between work and family. Generally, women take on or are given more responsibility for their homes than are men, leading to frustration and exhaustion. In this paper we will address some of the issues involved in balancing career and family. This paper will provide some solutions for the most common problems arising from todays busy schedules, and provide some insight on how to make the most of your time.
