Judged Upon Something That They Weren’t

People are constantly judged based on who they appear to be, however it may not reflect their genuine self. Kat, Petruchio, and Bianca are shown differently throughout the play, The Taming of the Shrew, and the movie, 10 things I Hate About You. They cannot display their true self and emotion due to fear of pain. As the play and movie progress, all of the characters are portrayed as something that they aren’t, whether it’s representation of their looks or imitation of their actions. For example, Kat is seen as an ugly terrible person when in reality she has built up a wall in order to not get hurt. We see the characters of Bianca, Kat, and Petruchio reveal who they actually are.

Bianca was perfect on the outside, she was absolutely gorgeous, but she was a little slower mentally. People thought of her as being dumb and didn’t really think her opinion on anything could matter. She basically was just the hot trophy wife that went with the flow, along with letting others run her life for her. Throughout Bianca’s whole life she had constantly been pushed into the background, unless it had something to do with showing everyone her beauty. Near the end of the play and the movie were one of the first times that Bianca laid herself out as something other than that beautiful, dumb girl that she had been advertised as her whole life. In 10 Things I Hate About you, Bianca had been getting irritated by Cameron, her fake French tutor, because he hadn’t asked her out yet. She quickly questioned him in French asking why he hadn’t and walked away in annoyance, leaving him dumbfounded. During Taming of the Shrew there was a scene where Bianca and her sister, Kat had gotten into a little fight. At that time Kat, who had unknowingly been bet on by her husband, had been talking to Bianca and a widow about how they should follow every command their husband gave. Bianca, who was appalled and utterly disgusted responded to her sister, “For shame! What kind of loyalty is this?” (5. 2. 134.) Therefore giving the indication that her sister’s love life had been based upon by bets and lies. For the first time in her life, she enduringly stood up for not only herself, but other women as well. By her doing this she shocked everyone in the room and showed them all that she wasn’t just the pretty, dumb girl that they had all thought of her before. That was one of the considerably leading areas where she projected that she had been portrayed as something that she wasn’t by
