Parenting is a challenge if you have to adapt and change to accommodate your child's needs. You may need to change what has worked before and the only way you know how from watching how your parents raise you. A father may have expectations for his daughter that she is not able to fulfill. In William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Baptista is and impulsive, biased and uncaring father because he wanted Katherina and he also takes part in a bet at the end of the play.

At the beginning of the play, Baptista has a pushy attitude and makes many rushed decisions. Baptista is not caring and is very rushed so he chooses for Katherina without second thought. He allows for bets to be placed on her daughter’s behaviours. When Petruchio says, “Let’s each one send unto his wife / And he whose wife most obedient… shall win the wager which we will propose” (5.2.66-69). He says this to Hortensio and Lucientio with Baptista listening. Husbands should not be betting on their wives and Baptista allows for this to happen. Baptista does not show fatherly traits. He is also trying to make Petruchio look good by increasing the amount of money Lucientio and Hortensio owes to him. In the quote, “The wager thou hast won, and I will add / Unto their losses twenty thousand crowns… For she is chang’d, as she had never been” (5.2.113-15) said by Baptista to Lucientio, Hortensio and Petruchio, this happens after Katherina obeys and Petruchio wins the bet. He is making it seem like Petruchio accomplished something great. Readers can also infer that Baptista sees Petruchio as a really good person.
