Nature is often used in writing to convey the feelings and emotions of human beings. If used successfully, it can amplify a character’s despair or elation, making clear to the reader what they are experiencing. The use of nature in this capacity allows the reader a better look at the experiences of different characters. In A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens utilizes nature to effectively convey human emotions.
Sydney Carton is a character with many regrets. He yearns for a life he was never able to experience, a life like the one led by Charles Darnay. Carton reflects on his life, “Waste forces within him, and a desert all around, this man stood still on his way across a silent terrace, and saw for a moment, lying in the wilderness before him, a mirage of honorable ambition, self-denial, and perseverance” (Dickens 88). Its poor citizens have been held down for too long and are ready to deal revenge on the higher classes. The revolutionaries are fed up with having to fight for survival, and they are a force to be reckoned with, “East, west, north, south, through the woods, four heavy-treading, unkempt figures crushed the high grass and cracked the branches, striding on cautiously to come together in the courtyard” (Dickens 222). The revolution and the burning of the chateau is depicted as a force of nature rather than an event brought on by the French citizens. It is an unstoppable power similar to that of the wind. Just as the wind blows, the Jaques will fight for the revolution and what they believe in. They will no longer stand to be locked in poverty while the nobility wastes money carelessly. They will take what they believe they deserve and will destroy anyone who stands in their way.
