Poker is undeniably a male dominated game. Think of the top casino movies and you’ll struggle to think of a female character that was depicted as the actual player rather than the distraction. With that in mind, can ladies play poker too? In Casino Royale, James Bond is shown playing a game of poker, as the HM agent Vespa Lynd walks into the room, all eyes are on her and not the poker table. This stereotypical depiction of women and poker has meant that it has been difficult for women to be taken seriously as professional players. Some tournaments continue to discourage female participation. Let us go forward with this story. Nevertheless, with the rise of popularity in online poker games it’s becoming more common to see women feature among the higher ranks. This is because the internet provides women with the ability to disguise who they really are, with more men playing poker than women it would only be right to assume that the person you’re playing against is a man right? Men argue that women aren’t capable of playing poker well as they’re too emotional and are unable to understand the technicalities of the game. Counter claims from women state that men are more likely to take higher risks and loose a lot more money because to their ego and belief they understand the rules of poker. Interestingly researchers claim that as there are more …show more content…
Some men say that women aren’t so easy to read; whilst others admit they become less ruthless and more gentlemanly. Some female poker players do admit to using their sex appeal to get them ahead in the game whilst others discourage such behavior and focus on refining their poker playing skills. Be prepared for the odd sexist comment and back chat unfortunately it comes with the territory as many men resent the fact that women is invading what they consider to be their
In early American literature, many authors began shifting the focus of their works from the refined upper class citizens to the real every-day experiences of the American people. As a result of this shift, authors began writing about life in the small towns scattered across the United States, while focusing on non-typical and socially and morally lowly characters. A perfect example of this type of writing can be found in “The Outcasts of Poker Flat,” a short story written by Bret Harte. In this story we are introduced to four characters, cast from their pioneertown for participating in morally objectionable activities. The four consisted of John Oakhurst, a gambler, Duchess, a prostitute, Mother Shipton, a madam, and Uncle Billy, a local drunk
Liar’s Poker is a game associated with Wall Street traders who use statistical reasoning and behavioral tactics in order to gamble. This exhilarating game is played with $1 bills. Each player picks up a bill from a pile of face down mixed up bills, and then will use the serial number on the face of the bill to place their playing strategy. The main objective is to bluff the opponents into believing that your bid does not exceed the combined sum of all of the serial numbers. According to Lewis, this is the core of the financial system – “big bluffs, and good poker psychology – as opposed to financial statements and balance sheets.”
In the hilarious 2009 blockbuster hit The Hangover, “the three best friends that anyone could have” need to find a way to get the money they owe Mr. Chow in order to have the groom to be, Doug, returned to them. Phil, Stu, and Alan devise an intricate scheme that uses card counting while playing Blackjack to win a lot of money. The scheme uses many distractions such as Stu, and his stripper wife, acting as a distraction as well as Phil making lots of noise and obscene gestures to the cameras of the casino in order to bring attention to him and allowing Alan to do the card counting and win the money they owe Mr. Chow. When the casino managers begin to become suspicious of the possible card counting that is going on, Stu’s recently married stripper wife falls to the floor causing the security to focus on her giving Alan and Phil time to escape unseen with all the recently won cash. This scene, although entertaining, does not accurately portray what goes on when someone is card counting in these big time casinos, such as the one seen in this movie, Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Card counting is much more subtle and not such a big scheme as it is portrayed in this very funny movie.
In “The Epistemic Significance of Disagreement”, Thomas Kelly gives two responses to the question “How should awareness of disagreement, with those that you take to be your epistemic equal, effect the rational confidence you have in your beliefs?”. Kelly discusses two possible responses to the question. The first is Richard Foley's first person perspective argument. Adam Elga calls the second the right reasons view (Elga, 2007 pg. 485). Kelly pursues the latter, and does not go further than agreeing with Foley that we should only view these disputes with a first person perspective.

“Men are thought to be physically tougher, more aggressive, more rational, better able to handle sex without love, and more likely to be successful at work by virtue of their greater will to win.” (Nicholson, 1993, 2)
As the room fills with smoke from cigars and cigarettes, I look across the table at the last guy in the hand. I think to myself, “Why did he just raise me?” I just raised the pot $25 on two pair. The other guy re-raised the pot another $25. My heart is beating like a freight train racing down the tracks, I’m doing everything in my power to stop from sweating and I’m trying to keep my face stone cold straight as to not give myself away. I’m pretty sure at this point that this guy is trying buy the pot, but it still makes me nervous. I decide to call his raise and when the cards are turned over I realize that I had just made the right call. I won the pot and fought off his bluff.
Poker mainly is perceived as a game of luck, however; when the rules of it are understood, poker is more off a game related to mental, mathematical, and physiological skills. This section will introduce the basic rules of poker, poker etiquette, the ranking values of the hands, and how the game proceeds.
A good example where women get paid much less money for the same sport is a WNBA. The Women’s Sports Foundation says that players from the WNBA in the 2015 season, the minimum salary was $38,913, the maximum salary was $109,500, and the team salary cap in 2012 was $878,000. For NBA players in the 2015-2016 season, the minimum salary is $525,093, the maximum salary is $16.407 million, and the team salary cap is an all-time high of $70 million. David Berri’s article on, “Basketball’s gender wage is even worse than you think,” talks about that in 2013-14, when the Phoenix Suns employed Dionte Christmas for 198 minutes. For those minutes–the only minutes Christmas has ever played in the National Basketball Association–he was paid the league minimum of $490,180.
Ian Fleming published his first novel, Casino Royale, in 1953. Later on, in 2006 a film was made based on the novel. Fleming published his novel pertaining a man, James Bond, who is a British secret agent and is licensed to kill. Bond is told to gamble with Le Chiffre, who is a member of the Russian secret service. James Bond is assigned a female partner, Vesper Lynd, who is actually a double agent for Russia and Great Britain. Throughout Casino Royale, James Bond is brought to the readers as very hard and insensitive. Whereas the film in 2006, Bond is brought to the film watchers as sensitive and caring. Men in the 1950’s society treat women than in today’s society. A lady should be treated with respect and given dignity. Men should
Gender in sports has been a controversial issue ever since sports were invented. In the early years, sports were played only by the men, and the women were to sit on the sidelines and watch. This was another area of life exemplifying the sexism of people in which women were not allowed to do something that men could. However, over the last century in particular, things have begun to change.
The basic system of just about every casino is that of the tables (including Roulette, Blackjack and Craps) filling the center of the room with computerized machines (including slots and video poker) that don’t need much tending to surrounding the area. Also, in many casinos there is a second floor surrounding the perimeter of the building with balconies everywhere so the main floor is still the center of attention. This setup brings the eye of casino patrons, wherever they may be, to the center of the casino. This strategic arrangement plays with the fact of human nature being drawn to the center of the action. Coincidentally, or not, the games in the center of the casinos are always the games where people often spend the most money. By chance if your eye isn’t drawn then perhaps the shrill of people winning will bring your attention. Don’t be fooled though, house advantage is always higher than...
Sexism also occurs within the actual gaming population where a large, if not whole part of the female gamer population encounters sexist and indecent remarks at least once from the male gaming population.
Most of those games show female characters wearing revealing clothes, which reduce their identity to mere sexual objects. However, developers put emphasis on the masculinity and physical power of male characters. The way those games portray female and male characters reinforces gender-role stereotypes. This can negatively affect the identity and the perception of the person playing those games.
The card game of poker has many variations most of which were created in the United states in the mid 1990s. The standard order of play applies to most of these games, but to fully specify a poker game online requires details about which hand values are used. The number of betting rounds and exactly what cards are dealt with and what other actions are taken between rounds.
