According to Pollard et al. (2014), The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of integration of QSEN competencies and learning strategies in nursing programs in New York State. The implementation of (QSEN) in nursing programs is the most important because it guides teaching future nursing professionals to raise the quality and safety of health services.
Another idea by, Jang, & Lee, (2017), was to evaluate nursing educators’ competencies and educational needs for patient safety in hospitals and nursing schools. They say that educational needs of “medication” and “infection prevention” as being higher and “human factors” and “complexity of systems” as being lower. When nurses have the knowledge and skills to work in an emergency room, they know the priorities and the steps to take in different situations, decreasing the risk of complications for patients. Nursing educators want different types of education for patient safety. Education cannot be only theory; it also must go hand in hand with clinical practice.

Other writers, Melnyk, Gallagher-Ford, Long, & Fineout-Overholt (2014) wrote about “The establishment of evidence-based practice competencies for practicing registered nurses and advance practice nurses in real-world clinical settings.” The main idea about this subject is to establish general competencies for nursing by the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) incorporating these into healthcare systems should conduct to a higher quality of care, improved patient outcomes, and reduce costs.

Another idea, from Kim, Lee, Eudey, & Dea, (2014) is that this study was to examine the concept of senior nursing from various ethnic backgrounds about the proportion of interaction with the educator using the nursing process and quality and safety education from Nurses (QSEN). Clinical educator contributes the senior nursing student with an experience as close to an actual work situation as possible in a less intimidating atmosphere. It helps students with the opportunity to obtain nursing knowledge, skills, and attitudes of QSEN competency skills and fundamental framework necessary for carrying out the nursing processes.
The QSEN initiative is the progression of quality and safety of education for nurses that began in 2005 and has been continued over the past eight years. It is a multi-phase process that shows current and future nurses how to apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes to their everyday nursing activities(QSEN, 2013, 1). Nurses and student nurses can use their knowledge, skills and attitudes to help prevent never events such as hospital acquired conditions. Never events are medical errors that could have been serious and preventable. They could have been caused by poor communication, lack of proper nursing skills, or simply just negligence. QSEN can also be used to improve nursing outcomes for everyone involved in the healthcare field.
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. When we look at it in this perspective, we would say that the doctor had done his or her job correctly based on the demanding situation that needed a quick decision or else the patient may not even survive. As we relate this healthcare concept back to the Queensland floods and the Wivenhoe dam engineers, the rising water in the dam would have been the illness, while the engineers would have been the medical professionals and the patient would have been the citizens of Queensland. It is in this perspective that we feel that the actions were actually correct. If it was not for the quick decisions made during the floods, there would have been possibly significantly worse damage.

The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN’s) goal is to prepare future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) that are needed to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work. QSEN focuses on six main competencies; patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics. As we have learned in earlier classes these competencies and their KSAs offer a base to help us and other nurses as we continue our education and become RNs. As we will learn in this class these KSAs go hand in hand with health assessment.

Patient’s safety will be compromised because increase of patient to nurse ratio will lead to mistakes in delivering quality care. In 2007, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) conducted a metanalysis and found that “shortage of registered nurses, in combination with increased workload, poses a potential threat to the quality of care… increases in registered nurse staffing was associated with a reduction in hospital-related mortality and failure to rescue as well as reduced length of stay.” Intense workload, stress, and dissatisfaction in one’s profession can lead to health problems. Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) (QSEN, 2018) graduate competencies determined by QSEN Institute list evidence-based care as a competency. This QSEN competencies support the need for redesign as evidence in the literature shows simulation as an effective tool to improve care. The QSEN Institute (2018) defines evidence-based practice as integrating the best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient/family preferences and values for delivery of optimal health care. The redesign may have a positive impact on the future patients of the student nurses as the students gain confidence, retain more knowledge and gain competence in the skills practiced.
