Technology is everywhere around us today. With tablets, phones, and video game consoles being handed to a mass of our world’s population, especially children, a question still remains about the function and purpose of libraries in modern society. With easier access to reading material being offered to the public by means of technology, people are steadily starting to abandon libraries in favor of a quicker and more efficient way of reading. Many libraries today have been renovated or remodeled to acclimate with modern interests and people’s fondness for technology. The Orland Park Public Library has local activities that don’t utilize books at all. Some activities such as a film series, canine obedience classes, and Microsoft Excel 2010 part II training are based on either technology or personal interest on the subject. (Source B) Many young Americans are becoming so consumed in technology they tend to stray away from books in favor of other ways to pass time. In modern society, you can see many more advertisements for video games, smart phones or tablets than for new books. This can cause people to become less exposed to reading, therefore giving them no reason to go to a library. Our countries first public library was erected in the 1730’s by founding father Benjamin Franklin, with the idea that the public should have the ability to exchange knowledge and information freely. (Source A) Today, as noted in the interview with Nancy Kranich, some libraries no longer host a democratic ideology for the distribution of on intellect or knowledge. Although they give access to past records or pieces on history, these assets are nearly untouched by young minds given the presence of something more appealing. Perhaps, a gaming room or a room filled with alluring screens that envelops young Americans so easily. Some say, libraries have stayed relevant for almost 300 years, why would they stop now.
