The two poems “Sympathy” and “I know why the caged bird sings” are similar. They are similar because they both talk about a caged bird. They are both about people comparing themselves to the bird, in “Sympathy” it is referring to the bird being caged because the person that is comparing themselves isn’t as free as they wish they were. It was the same concept in “I know why the caged bird sings” because the bird is caged and the person feels caged as well so they are comparing themselves to the bird. In “Sympathy” it is talking about the bird singing and hoping that one day it can be free and it is the same with the person they just sing and have hopes that one day they can be free. The short story, “The White Heron” and the poem, “A Caged Bird” are both alike and different in many ways. In the next couple of paragraphs I will explain these similarities and differences and what makes them unique to the stories.

The novel, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", by Maya Angelou is the first series of five autobiographical novels. This novel tells about her life in rural Stamps, Arkansas with her religious grandmother and St. Louis, Missouri, where her worldly and glamorous mother resides. At the age of three Maya and her four-year old brother, Bailey, are turned over to the care of their paternal grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. Southern life in Stamps, Arkansas was filled with humiliation, violation, and displacement. These actions were exemplified for blacks by the fear of the Ku Klux Klan, racial separation of the town, and the many incidents in belittling blacks.
Paul Laurence Dunbar depicts this idea in his well-known poem “Sympathy” (one of my favorite poems!), describing a caged bird that longs for freedom. Dunbar establishes his knowledge of the bird’s feelings, his desire for freedom (his motive of rebellion). Dunbar draws empathy from the audience as he describes the bird’s integrity in the descriptive lines: “I know why the caged bird beats his wing Till its blood is red on the cruel bars.” The caged bird goes to a dangerous extent to be heard, as he bleeds on his prison bars, for he is willing to do anything for his freedom— this shows his integrity and confidence in his values. Dunbar finishes off the poem with powerful lines: “But a prayer that he sends from his heart’s deep core, But a plea that upward heaven he flings— I know why the caged bird sings!” The caged bird is depicted as battered, bruised, and beaten from his violent rebellion— praying as his last chance of freedom. The bird’s belief in its virtuous rebellion justifies the revolt, as we see the bird’s constant persistency, even as the mutiny is demoted to prayer.
In I Know why the Caged Bird Sings the author uses many different literary devices and various figurative language examples. The use of metaphors, imagery, similes, and Symbolism has a great effect. They’re effective due to the fact in how they inform the reader of various important details needed to understand the story completely. The use of specific, different, and various types of language illustrate to the reader the effect of racism on many characters in the novel.
These two poems may seem like very similar poems at first glance, but when they are picked apart line for line to find the true meaning, they are much different. The underlying themes of these poems aren’t even close to one another. One poem describes a moment that changed a teenager’s life, causing him to mature in the process. The other poem describes how nature, man, and technology can hurt and better each other. By saying these poems are the same simply because they are about animals dying would be merely scratching the surface of what these poems are about.
Coleridge and Poe are both known for writing incredible horror stories. There most famous stories are The Raven, Poe, and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Coleridge. Both stories were the first of their kind and were written around the same time. These poems have many things in common and many other things not in common. The main focus here is the symbolism of the birds in the poem. The poems are in fact based around the birds and their meanings. There are three main points to compare between the symbolism of the birds, they are; the birds both being an omen, the birds giving a feeling of remorse or prosperity, and the birds creating a false hope.
Wineburg astutely notes that "History offers a storehouse of complex and rich problems, not unlike those that confront us daily in the real world. Lyrical Ballads were written in a time of great change. They were dominated by the French Revolution and both Wordsworth and Coleridge felt great impact from this. There was disruption all over with the American War of Independence and other wars worldwide. Britain itself was changing rapidly due to colonial expansion, which brought new wealth, ideas and fashion, and there was much disturbance to both the people and the land with the act of enclosure, which may have meant more effective farming but less work. The introduction of the Poor Laws meant that landowners paid their remaining staff very little knowing that they would be supplemented by poor relief. However the conditions stated by the Laws before aid would be given were very similar to ?The Last Of The Flock? with people having to give up every means of self support and therefore reduce the chance of them ever living independently again. The Industrial Revolution introduced the new ?middle? class for which many of these poems were written for. They use simple language to allow them to understand and self educate, which many of them were very interested in doing and bettering themselves, much like Wordsworth himself and his sister as shown in ?Tintern Abbey?. Here he talks of her being at the stage of education that he was five years before when he last visited.
The title of the poem, “Sympathy”, represents the feeling that the speaker has toward a bird enclosed in a cage. The speaker relates to the bird by repeating the words “I know” and following them with an action of the bird, revealing that he has also experienced similar events that caused him to feel like the bird. He knows the pain of the small bird when nature is taking its beautiful course right outside of the window, but feeling the balmy sun on his face is impossible. The speaker uses a simile to compare the flowing river to a “stream of glass”, implanting in the mind of the reader an image ...

“Sympathy” is the feeling of pity and sorrow for someone else’s misfortunes. Dunbar attempted to make a life for himself, but was shut down because of the color of his skin. When things got tough, Dunbar turned to poetry. By the time that the poem had been written in 1897, Dunbar had been rejected from more jobs that he was hired. The toll that the racially prejudice society in America, at the time, left Dunbar in a state of loneliness and unwanted which is reflected in the lines I know why the caged bird beats his wing/ Till its blood is red on the cruel bars / For he must fly back to his perch and cling.” He never gave up and kept trying to make it in life with all of the circumstances against him. “I hate this feeling. You know, feeling unimportant and unwanted is the worst feeling ever.” (unknown) Dunbar’s poem reflects the toll that he is not wanted in the society that he was born into, and the emptiness in his heart that a person feels when they have reached the breaking

In “Sympathy”, by Paul Laurence Dunbar, a man can see the reflection of the subjugation he feels as he views a bird, trapped in a cage. In this lyric poem, filled with agony, grief, and painful emotion, a reader can receive a glimpse into the eyes and mind of someone who has been oppressed. This poem is designed to create a tone that gives the reader insight into and lets the reader feel the pain of the bird and the man who can sympathize with him.
I chose these three poems because the subject matter appealed to me and I believe that the poems convey their meaning very effectively. Upon researching the poems, I discovered that Caged Bird was in fact inspired by Sympathy, which accounts for the similarities in language and imagery, as outlined below. All three poems deal with the subject of freedom using the imagery of birds; On Liberty and Slavery is narrated as a human plea for freedom, and makes reference to birds in that context, whereas Caged Bird and Sympathy both use the imagery of caged birds to explore the theme of loss of freedom. The symbolism of birds is used to depict freedom, as birds are essentially without constraints; in comparison to the limitations of humans, they have limitless possibilities. When a bird is caged, however, it loses that potential and is restricted not by its own limitations, but the limits set by another.
