There are many different ways someone is considered to be free, the direct definition is to enjoy personal rights or liberty, this can be interpreted in different forms. In their poems “Caged Bird”, and “Sympathy”, Maya Angelou and Paul Laurance Dunbar use caged birds to represent what it means to be free. They both use birds to convey a better image for the reader. Birds are used in both poems of “Caged Bird” and “Sympathy” as a central image because the caged birds are metaphors for true freedom and hope.
In the poem “Sympathy” the author explains why the caged bird sings, this is said many times through the poem. The reason for this behavior is because he want to escape, and fly back to his porch. He constantly beast his wings even if the old scars haven't healed, and are pulsing with agonizing pain.When the caged bird can’t beat his wings any more he finds other ways to draw attention to himself. “I know why the caged bird sings, ah me, when his wing is bruised and bosom sore, Who he beats his bare and he would be free; It is not a carol of joy or glee, But a prayer that he sends from his heart’s deep core, But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings - I know why the caged bird sings.” The author states that the caged bird sings when and only because it can’t beat it’s wings on the bars anymore. This is a way that the caged bird can rebel. The caged bird sings but he doesn’t sing with joy or happiness, it is a cry for help, it is attempting to escape, to get someone's attention to free him. These quotes show why the bird does what he does, why it sings, and why the author chooses to use a caged bird in the poem, it is obvious to see the bird is unhappy and it it longs for freedom because it does everything in it’s power to defy and rebel against its cage. This caged bird can’t beat his wings, fly, or move, he can only sing a song that is a cry for help. bird. In both poems the author has some way of showing the reader what the caged birds could have, these examples are used to show how close the birds are to being free. The caged bird in “Sympathy” is constantly trying to get out because he knows how close freedom is to him. “I know what the caged bird feels, alas! When the sun is bright on the upland slopes; When the wind stirs soft through the springing grass, And the river flows like a stream of glass; When the first bird sings and the first bud opens, And the faint perfume from its chalice steals - I know what the caged bird feels.” The author added this into the poem to describe how different the bird’s cage is from the outside world. Dunbar makes this place beautiful and perfect for bird, the narrator understands what the caged bird feels and the reader feels sympathy. Angelou uses another bird in the poem to compare the caged bird too, it gives the caged bird a reason to sing. “ The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn and he names the sky his own.” This bird is free and is even prospering, it doesn’t have a care in the world. The free bird even dares to claim the sky as his own because nothing is holding him back. Both poems give the caged birds motivation to get out of their cages by patronizing the birds with freedom, this gives the birds a little hope to why they should be singing. The birds in both poems are symbolic and are used as metaphors for being free, also they are both used to give a similar lesson.The author titles the poem “Sympathy” because that is what the author wants the reader to feel for the bird. The author of “Caged Bird” uses a free bird to patronize the caged one. These poems are both very similar they both use caged birds to symbolize black slavery in the 1800’s. They both give the birds a reason to escape even though they are different the message is the same, overall “Caged Bird” is more meaningful because it makes you question true freedom with the caged bird being crippled, because it cannot fly and can only sing.
The title to me is almost ironic. In Caged Bird it talks about limited freedom in the sense that a bird that is caged cannot do the one thing it was made for, to fly. Caged Bird is almost a whole reference to how there are many limitations on freedom. I believe each stanza represents a different “time” for the bird. In the first stanza there are many action words used along with the second and third stanzas. In the first stanza it talks about how the bird is free. The author uses action words like, leaps, floats, dips, and dares. The first stanza states, “A free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky”(Caged Bird). In context I interpreted this stanza as, a bird jumps onto the wind and is gliding to where the wind may take him. Also that the bird can fly whenever he wants, the sun is orange at dusk and dawn, therefore the bird chooses when to fly. In the second stanza it states, “But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing”(Caged Bird). While reading, I felt a sense of sadness for the caged bird, as its undeniable determination was persistent and valiant. Along with the message of the poem, I also appreciated Angelou’s unique sense of “unstructured verse” and her non-traditional poetic approach. To begin with, the poem Sympathy suggests to the reader a comparison between the lifestyle of the caged bird, and the African American. Paul Laurence Dunbar’s center of attention of Sympathy is how the African American identifies and relates to the frustrations and pain that a caged bird experiences. Dunbar begins the poem by stating “I know what the caged bird feels, alas!”(African American Literature page 922). This shows the comparison of a caged bird to an African American. Dunbar wrote this poem with vivid, descriptive, and symbolic language throughout the entire poem. Dunbar uses this vivid, descriptive and symbolic language to stress his point that some one tied up in bondage and chains is not privileged enough to enjoy the simple but unique parts of life. Dunbar establishes his knowledge of the bird ’s feelings, his desire for freedom (his motive of rebellion). It is very interesting how the author Maya Angelou was there and the way she described every detail with great passion. In the book Maya and Bailey move to a lot of places, which are, Stamps, Arkansas; St. Louis, Missouri; and San Francisco, California. Maya comes threw these places with many thing happening to her and people she knows. She tries to hold onto all the good memories and get rid of the bad but new ones just keep coming. That is why this book is very interesting. It keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

Furthermore, Maya Angelou’s poem, ‘Caged Bird,’ there is a heavy usage of imagery to contrast the lives of the free and caged bird. For example, the first stanza includes vivid details about how free and easygoing the free bird’s life is. The book thus explores a lot of important issues, such as: sexuality and race relations, and shows us how society violated her as a young African American female. In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Maya Angelou clearly expresses the physical pain of sexual assault, the mental anguish of not daring to tell, and her guilt and shame for having been raped. Her timidity and fear of telling magnify the brutality of the rape. For more than a year after the rape she lives in self-imposed silence, speaking only very rarely. This childhood rape reveals the pain that African American women suffered as victims not only of racism but also sexism.
She is comparing a free white person, the free bird, to a black slave; the caged bird. I chose these three poems because the subject matter appealed to me and I believe that the poems convey their meaning very effectively. Upon researching the poems, I discovered that Caged Bird was in fact inspired by Sympathy, which accounts for the similarities in language and imagery, as outlined below. All three poems deal with the subject of freedom using the imagery of birds; On Liberty and Slavery is narrated as a human plea for freedom, and makes reference to birds in that context, whereas Caged Bird and Sympathy both use the imagery of caged birds to explore the theme of loss of freedom. The symbolism of birds is used to depict freedom, as birds are essentially without constraints; in comparison to the limitations of humans, they have limitless possibilities. When a bird is caged, however, it loses that potential and is restricted not by its own limitations, but the limits set by another.
In the “Caged Bird” Angelou’s comparison to the caged bird was African-Americans in the society they were living in. She symbolized the bird with African-Americans experiences. When Maya is young, she doesn’t recognize the racism and discrimination as well as her grandmother does. As Maya gets older, she begins to recognize and take notice to the racism and discrimination towards her and African Americans everywhere. Maya may not recognize the racism and discrimination very well at her young age, but it still affects her outlook on life the same way it would if she had recognized it.
