1- I used the book When the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou. It has 36 chapters. The movie I used was the Troy.
2- The book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Troy share similar problems. Politics, Human rights, and public opinion are the issues that both the book and the movie express. a- Politics is an issue that appears in the movie and the book. In the movie, power hungry Achilles kills his father and valuable general in a afford to become a King. In I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou stated, “Anything that works against you can also work for you once you understand the Principle of Reverse.” (pg. 256). The author expressed the prisoners struggle for power which often results in violence. According Hans Mogenthon, politic is defined as “power struggle” (class notes.) b- The second similarity is human rights. Both the movie and the book show how the citizens and the War Fighters of Troy denied their rights. In the movie, the soldiers are locked in a small cell with ill medical care and disregard of human life. In the book Maya Angelou states, “ a person convicted of a felony and sent to prison, lost privileges such as voting and holding civic appointments” (pg. 452). Prisoners had no standing in legal action involving their property, marriage, or custody of their children or other matters outside the prison. According to Mora et al, “Texas constitution gives protection to crime victims” (pg32.) c- Third, is medical care. In the movie, Achilles suffered an illness early in the movie which disabled him for a period of time, then later in the movie recovers from it then continues on to fight in the war for the freedom him and his land deserve. Not knowing what exactly is going on in the civil rights movements as a young adult was not accepted. d- Racism and segregation; debilitating displacement; resistance within the book shows that the civil rights movements was a major movement in that the citizens wanted equal rights among each other, but could not until the civil rights act was passed later on as years passed.
5- Five Political issues in the Movie.
a. The government was ran horribly by the leader of the Trojan soldier, leading them on to war and not knowing what they are getting themselves into.
b. The dictator of Troy and the Trojan soldiers showed that there are no limits for what the citizens say of the government or dictatorship. Whatever goes on within the city of Troy, the citizens have no final say so.
