Are Diamond's A Girl's Best Friend? Diamonds are said to be a symbol of love and appreciation. What do diamonds really symbolize? Do they symbolize that love can be bought, or how materialistic humans are. Have people ever stopped to think where this shiny stone came from, or how much blood was spilt over it. The United Nations definition for a blood diamond is: "Diamonds that originate from areas controlled by forces or factions opposed to legitimate and internationally recognized governments, and are used to fund military action in opposition to those governments, or in of the decisions of the Security Council." A diamond could cost an individual their life. Diamonds are not a girl's best friend. The feud over these diamonds causes violence, unjust labour conditions, and harm to our environment. Violence is something that occurs daily. The hunt for blood diamonds has caused civil wars in more than seven African countries. The act of diamond mining, due to inadequate regulation and planning has caused environmental damage in Africa and many other countries throughout the world. Improper diamond mining causes soil erosion, deforestation, and has caused many locals to relocate. In some extreme cases, diamond mining can collapse an entire ecosystem. When a mine field has been stripped of its resources and abandoned it can cause wildlife to vanish, topsoil to erode, and cause once suitable land for farming to now become unsuitable. These mining pits can also cause public health disasters. The pits can fill with rainwater and attract mosquitoes which in the end can cause malaria and other diseases.
