Author Shirley Jackson obviously does not take symbolism lightly in her short story, “The Lottery”. The story “The Lottery” is a story that never seems to give the full truth and meaning of the objects, characters, and concepts without reading the full story. The theme and symbols in the story “The Lottery” are twisted and not as the reader may think. Three main symbols that are the main plot are the names, the paper, and the little black box.
The black box has the lottery tickets inside it, which truly holds the fate of one individual. The black box symbolizes a mystery, in the story, a mystery of who will be chosen. Throughout the story, the story is kind of a mystery, for we do not know what is going to happen and who is going to be chosen. We the readers do not know the purpose of the story or what is going on, and the little black box represents this all through the story. The black box along with a mystery also symbolizes death, grief, and evil. The color black is typically associated with death, grief, and evil, which when we read the full story, we know that is how the story ends. When one thinks of death, they think of a casket or coffin, which is holding a dead person. The black box holds the names of many people, one name …show more content…

For instance Mr. Summers. Mr. Summers is like the mayor of the town, he controls all of the activities in the town, he is the owner of all the coal mines, and is in control with the lottery. Like his name, Mr. Summers, the lottery is always taken place in the summer. Mr. Adams is a male and is given the chance to draw very first. Mr. Adams is like all of humanity, he can be in the place of all humanity. Therefore Mr. Adams is like the average person in the community.
