The short stories “Hills like white elephants” by Ernest Hemingway and “Little Things” by Raymond Carver display a conflict between two young couples. In the case of both stories the couples are at the verge of separation, because of their conflicting views and feelings. The stories “Hills Like White elephants” and “Little Things”, by Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Carver, show separation of a couple, using the style elements of setting and symbolism. The authors Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Carver use setting to show the theme of separation between the two couples. For example, Both stories provide symbols that represent the separation through the distance between the characters. First, from the short story “Little Things ”, Carver starts the scene where the man is packing his bags, note that the place where the two individuals are is extremely important because it a representation of their feelings, “He was in the bedroom pushing clothes into a suitcase when she came to the door” (Carver 1). Immediately we can see that there is a distance between the man and the woman, not only does this show the physical distance of characters but also symbolises the emotional detachment between the two couples. Thus, because of their lack of communication towards each other it ends up killing, or seriously injuring, the baby. Additionally, from the short story “Hills Like White Elephants”, we can also see a separation between the two characters when the author describes the setting. The setting is at a train station “between two lines of rails” (Hemingway 475), and Hemingway purposely chooses to add this in the description of the setting to portray a symbolic meaning. The two railings, most likely going in opposite directions, symbolise the different mindsets of the man and the woman, which emphasizes the void between the couple. Given these points it is understood that the authors use symbolism to show separation between the couple. In a well-written short story, different literary elements and terms are incorporated into the story by the author. Ernest Hemingway frequently uses various literary elements in his writing to entice the reader and enhance each piece that he writes. In Hills Like White Elephants, Hemingway uses symbols to teach the reader certain things that one may encounter during daily life. Symbolism may be defined as relating to, using, or proceeding by means of symbols (Princeton). There are a few characters within this short story. Jig is the protagonist and the antagonist is the American. The waitress is supporting the story with quick cameos as she delivers cervezas to the couple. Although these characters were not described in great detail they leave a strong image of a struggling young couple in your mind. Hemingway describing the couple as the American and Jig was purposeful in that it allows for the readers mind to place anyone into that scenario. However, the landscape was described in greater detail to acclimate the reader to the metaphorical inferences and similes that would be exchanged between the American and Jig. In “Big Two-Hearted River”, he uses imagery and symbolism to add meaning to In Our Time. As Nick is walking, he observes grasshoppers whose colors have changed. Hemingway writes “he realized that they had all turned black from living in the burned-over land. He realized that the fire must have come the year before, but the grasshoppers were all black now. He wondered how long they would stay that way” (Hemingway 136). Nick notices that the grasshoppers have changed colors from yellow or green to black in order to adapt to their new, soot covered environment. Since the word “black” has a negative connotation, readers can conclude that the grasshoppers symbolize something negative. This relates to Nick because he is now “black”; he is damaged from his experience in the war. He also wonders how long the grasshoppers will remain in this state, similarly to how he wonders how long he will remain in his. Another example is in “Cat in the Rain”. He uses imagery to disclose a young wife’s desire for a child. He says “She held a big tortoise-shell cat pressed tight against her and swung down against her body (Hemingway 94). This reveals to readers the woman’s want for a baby, with the image of the cat on her stomach representing a pregnant stomach. While reading short stories, two stood out: Ernest Hemingway’s Hills Like White Elephants and Raymond Carver’s Cathedral. The themes in both stories are powerful and convey strong messages that really pose existential thoughts. Not only is each story’s theme attention grabbing, but so is the common and reoccurring use of symbolism throughout the stories. They did not just use the Element of Fiction symbolism, but even used one common symbol. Ernest Hemingway’s story Hills Like White Elephants and Raymond Carver’s story Cathedral each contain existential and similar themes such as talking versus communicating and looking versus seeing, as well as demonstrating creative and comparable symbolism throughout.

In the short story by Ernest Hemingway, "Hills Like White Elephants," a couple is delayed at a train station en route to Madrid and is observed in conflict over the girl's impending abortion. In his writing, Hemingway does not offer any commentary through a specific character's point of view, nor, in the storytelling, does he offer his explicit opinions on how to feel or think about the issues that emerge. The narrative seems to be purely objective, somewhat like a newspaper or journal article, and in true Hemingway form the story ends abruptly, without the couple's conflict clearly being resolved. The ambiguity of the ending has been a subject of much debate; however, the impact of what is not said in words can be gleaned through the symbolism of their surroundings. Ernest Hemingway is an incredible writer, known for what he leaves out of stories not for what he tells. His main emphasis in Hills Like White Elephants seems to be symbolism. Symbolism is the art or practice of using symbols, especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning or by expressing the invisible or intangible by means of visible or sensuous representations (merriam-webster.com). He uses this technique to emphasize the importance of ideas, once again suggesting that he leaves out the important details of the story by symbolizing their meaning.
In a symbolic reading, the opening paragraph describes the crisis that exists in the marriage of the couple. In other words, the description of the bad weather, of the "empty square"[1](l.10) and of their isolation, reflects this conflict and also sets the negative mood. In fact, since the beginning, Ernest Hemingway insists on the isolation of the couple that "does not know any of the people they passed" (ll.1-2) and are "only two Americans"(l.1). Here it is interesting to notice that they are isolated from the outside world but also from each other. There is no communication and they have no contact, they are distant from each other.
