It was Ernest Hemingway’s belief that “for a true writer each book should be a new beginning where he tries again for something that is beyond attainment” (Nobel Prize Speech). This means that each time someone puts pen to paper, he should strive for such realness that it seems unreal. Rhetoric, or use of language, is the most critical aspect of writing. This is because a skilled use of rhetoric not only allows the writer to convey his ideas to an audience, but also manipulate the way the audience perceives them. In “Big Two-Hearted River”, he uses imagery and symbolism to add meaning to In Our Time. As Nick is walking, he observes grasshoppers whose colors have changed. Hemingway writes “he realized that they had all turned black from living in the burned-over land. He realized that the fire must have come the year before, but the grasshoppers were all black now. He wondered how long they would stay that way” (Hemingway 136). Nick notices that the grasshoppers have changed colors from yellow or green to black in order to adapt to their new, soot covered environment. Since the word “black” has a negative connotation, readers can conclude that the grasshoppers symbolize something negative. This relates to Nick because he is now “black”; he is damaged from his experience in the war. He also wonders how long the grasshoppers will remain in this state, similarly to how he wonders how long he will remain in his. Another example is in “Cat in the Rain”. He uses imagery to disclose a young wife’s desire for a child. He says “She held a big tortoise-shell cat pressed tight against her and swung down against her body (Hemingway 94). This reveals to readers the woman’s want for a baby, with the image of the cat on her stomach representing a pregnant stomach. In “Mr. and Mrs. Elliot”, he says “Mrs. Elliot and the girl friend now slept together in the big mediaeval bed” (Hemingway 88). Without explicitly admitting it, Hemingway implies that Mrs. Elliot and her “friend” are lovers. Based on the vignette preceding this story, this is due to Mr. Elliot’s lack of masculinity. The vignette tells the story of a man who fails in his attempt to kill a bull in a bullfight, showing that he, too, lacks masculinity. This directly relates to “Mr. and Mrs. Elliot” because they both show men who are not manly enough to perform their respective duties. Another example of this is in “Soldier’s Home”, during which a soldier’s transition from war to home is described. He says “Before Krebs went away to the war he had never been allowed to drive the family motor car… Now, after the war, it was still the same car” (Hemingway 70) and “He had learned that in the army” (Hemingway 72). After this story comes a vignette in which two men are seen showing their prejudice towards certain races. “They 're crooks, ain 't they… They 're wops, ain 't they… I can tell wops a mile off” (Hemingway 79). These prejudices most likely derive from the war. The placement of this vignette directly following the “Soldier’s Home” emphasizes how the war can follow people home and alter the ways in which they view the world around them. The books Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, and The Last Book in The Universe, written by Rodman Philbrick, are similar in plot and theme. Both books highlight the negative effect of technology in futuristic dystopian worlds. The ideas of censorship play a big role in the two stories. While the ideas of both books may be similar, the way they have been written are very differently. Fahrenheit 451 has a unique style, full of symbolism, figurative language, and rich vocabulary which is Bradbury’s trademark. Reuben's use of figurative language in the novel Peace Like a River reveals fundamental elements of both his character and his manner of speaking. It both allows the reader to better follow the action and creates a vivid picture of the scene at hand, and simultaneously gives some insight as to his personality and the way he observes things. This use of figurative language serves to make the story an even more enjoyable read, as it makes each scene worth reading in and of itself, not to mention the story as a whole.
William Faulkner brings all aspects of the game to life by going beyond the game itself, and immersing the readers into the intricate details that are often overlooked by most spectators. While spectators and televised sports commentators focus on the literal game itself, the points and teams, Faulkner describes the “kaleidoscopic whirl” of motion, the grace of the players and the designs they carve into the ice. He goes beyond the typical description of skates and hockey sticks, depicting them as “knife blades of skates” and “deft sticks which could break bones.” Faulkner, through this fluid and detail oriented writing, portrays the game of hockey in a way most people fail to see.
Because of the above, it is helpful to have some understanding of his theory. In Death in the afternoon, Hemingway (1932,191) points out that no matter how good a phrase or a simile a writer may have, he is spoiling his work out of egotism if he puts it in where it is not absolutely necessary. The form of a work, according to Hemingway, should be created out of experience, and no intruding elements should be allowed to falsify that form and betray that experience. As a result, all that can be dispensed with should be pruned off: convention, embellishment, rhetoric. It is this tendency of writing that has brought Hemingway admiration as well as criticism, but it is clear that the author knew what he was doing when he himself commented on his aim:

The world of Ernest Hemingway’s “Big Two-Hearted River” exists through the mostly unemotional eyes of the character Nick. Stemming from his reactions and the suppression of some of his feelings, the reader gets a sense of how Nick is living in a temporary escape from society and his troubles in life. Despite the disaster that befell the town of Seney, this tale remains one of an optimistic ideal because of the various themes of survival and the continuation of life. Although Seney itself is a wasteland, the pine plain and the campsite could easily be seen as an Eden, lush with life and ripe with the survival of nature.
In a well-written short story, different literary elements and terms are incorporated into the story by the author. Ernest Hemingway frequently uses various literary elements in his writing to entice the reader and enhance each piece that he writes. In Hills Like White Elephants, Hemingway uses symbols to teach the reader certain things that one may encounter during daily life. Symbolism may be defined as relating to, using, or proceeding by means of symbols (Princeton). The use of symbols in Hills Like White Elephants is utterly important to the plot line and to the fundamental meaning of the story. Through this use of symbolism, the reader can begin to reveal the hidden themes in this short story.
Among the many symbols of history, the top three are the hills, white elephants, and the railway station. Hemingway uses these elements to develop the theme of the story. The theme is how Jig sees the opportunity to keep her child and have a happy life, while the man is unable to see the possibilities and work to persuade her to go through with the abortion.

Comley and Scholes (1998) suggest that literary critics agreed that Hemingway’s style has undergone several changes. Cowley (1962, p. 46) argues that “by the early 1930’s Hemingway’s technique, apparently simple in the beginning, was becoming more elaborate”. Epstein (1982, p. 557) agrees that Hemingway was reduced to having produced only one good novel The Sun also Rises, some good short stories, and “the originator of once elegantly simple prose style that over the years dried up and flaked off in self-parody”. While Assadnassab (2005, p. 19) maintains that Hemingway uses “long plain words”, other critics such as Young (1966, p. 203) claim that Hemingway prefers to use short words.
The material objects that Hemingway uses to convey the theme are beer, the good and bad hillsides, and a railroad station between two tracks. The beer represents the couple’s, “the American” and “the girl’s”, usual routine activity they do together. This bothers the girl because “that’s all [they] do … look at things and try new drinks.” This shows that the girl is tired of doing the same thing and wants to do something different, like having a baby and a family, instead of fooling around all the time. She wants to stop being a girl and become a woman. Hemingway then presents the reader with two contrasting hills. One hill on one side of the station is dull, desolate, and barren; “it had no shade and no trees”, very desert like. However, the other hill on the other side of the station is beautiful, plentiful in nature, and had “fields of grain and tress along the banks of the Ebro River.” Also on each side of the station where each hill is, there is a train track. When a writer picks up their pen and paper, begins one of the most personal and cathartic experiences in their lives, and forms this creation, this seemingly incoherent sets of words and phrases that, read without any critical thinking, any form of analysis or reflexion, can be easily misconstrued as worthless or empty. When one reads an author’s work, in any shape or form, what floats off of the ink of the paper and implants itself in our minds is the author’s personality, their style. Reading any of the greats, many would be able to spot the minute details that separates each author from another; whether it be their use of dialogue, their complex descriptions, their syntax, or their tone. When reading an excerpt of Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast one could easily dissect the work, pick apart each significant moment from Hemingway’s life and analyze it in order to form their own idea of the author’s voice, of his identity. Ernest Hemingway’s writing immediately comes across as rather familiar in one sense. His vocabulary is not all that complicated, his layout is rather straightforward, and it is presented in a simplistic form. While he may meander into seemingly unnecessary detail, his work can be easily read. It is when one looks deeper into the work, examines the techniques Hemingway uses to create this comfortable aura surrounding his body of work, that one begins to lift much more complex thoughts and ideas. Hemingway’s tone is stark, unsympathetic, his details are precise and explored in depth, and he organizes his thoughts with clarity and focus. Hemingway has the uncanny gift of imagery, and he possesses a brilliant mastery of the English language. He is adept at manipulating words and weaving complex sentences; furthermore, "Meticulous description takes its place…For Hemingway…description is definition." Symbolism in Cat in the Rain by Ernest Hemingway In his short story Cat in the Rain, Ernest Hemingway uses imagery and subtlety to convey to the reader that the relationship between the American couple is in crisis and is quite clearly dysfunctional. In other words, the reader has to have a symbolic reading of the images. In fact, what seems to be a simple tale of an American couple spending a rainy afternoon inside their hotel room serves as a great metaphor for their relationship.
