How do certain symbols in books relate to us? How do we decide which symbols actually can relate to us? In Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, we explore the different symbols that associate with the play. There are three main symbols that appear in this play. There symbols are the ghosts, Scrooge, and Tiny Tim. The ghosts in A Christmas Carol are a principal symbol with the play’s development. The first spirit, the spirit of Christmas Past, tries to remind you of your past mistakes, and how you could have fixed them. After the ghost of past is done with Ebenezer Scrooge, he realizes why he turned out so hateful and unhappy with Christmas. Cratchit, is a purposeful depiction of our senses, of loss, sympathy, and of fondness. Tiny Tim has a fatal disease, which will eventually kill him. Scrooge realizes that the loss of Tim will impact more than just the Cratchits. Our senses of loss, and memories of past loss, will surely be triggered when we read about what happens to Tiny Tim. You can realize in this story that the Cratchit’s are poor, meaning they don’t have a lot of money to help Tiny Tim get the treatment he really needs. The Cratchit’s cannot even afford a turkey for Christmas. Tiny Tim just has to enjoy his probably last Christmas, it doesn’t really matter if they are poor. He reminds us of how close we feel or how distant we feel to our family. He is a poor boy, but still is happy everyday, just to be with his family at christmastime. Tiny Tim wishes that everyone is blessed for the holidays, even though he is not as fortunate. Tim Cratchit shows us how loss, sympathy, and fondness can be triggered in a story.
