The current issue I have chosen to discuss is human/sex trafficking. Human trafficking is sociological in nature because it has to do with a spreading issue human society. The amount of human trafficking has been continuing to increase. Human trafficking is basically a modern form of slavery. Human trafficking includes forced labor, forced marriage, sexual exploitation, and sexual slavery. Victims can be coerced into human trafficking by violence, threats, lies, for money, or they can be taken completely against their will through abduction or kidnapping. Today, there are around 20 to 30 million people being held in human trafficking.
Symbolic interactionism deals with the one-on-one relationships between people in a society. Human trafficking can be analyzed in the symbolic interactionist perspective. The symbolic interactionist perspective looks at society as the result of interactions between people. People in society interpret each other’s behaviors. The functionalist perspective sees society as a formation with many different parts combining to meet the biological and social needs of each person in that society. The functionalist perspective with human trafficking is similar the conflict perspective with human trafficking. With the functionalist perspective, it shows how each member of society has both biological and social needs for survival. The traffickers take advantage of people (more oftentimes women) promising them a good job where they can earn a big income.
