Rationalization is the process whereby emotions, traditions, and values are replaced by value-rational thought and actions (rational and calculated). These include the attempt to discover the most effective and efficient technique to accomplish a valued goal. According to Weber’s theory, rationalization makes ends of means, however it incarcerates one in an iron cage of rationalized organizations and associations. In Weber’s perception, the contemporary society, specifically the western world is developing towards increased rationalization. Weber believed that bureaucracy is the most preeminent example of rationalization. Hence, Weber’s central focus can be identified as the rationalization of society, particularly its bureaucratization. Such a case is one of Sylvie Therrien. Therrien was labeled a “Whistleblower”. She worked as a fraud analyst for the employment insurance in Canada. EI’s absolute job is to financially support and assist unemployed people in Canada that endure the pain of losing their jobs, however, not as a consequence of their own mistake. Therrein’s job as a fraud analyst was to test and evaluate whether the EI claims made by her clients were authentic. In the documentary “The Final Offer” shows a factory in Canada purchased by the GM plant. Weber’s social dynamic is more of institutional insight and sees bureaucracy as an inner working of a company. The documentary over a GM company specifies a working class in Canada that has different levels of power within the organization. Therefore Weber’s view of bureaucracy doesn’t work within this system for many different reasons as will be discussed in this essay.
Canadian workplaces today seem to be a fairly diverse place, with a blend of many religions, ethnicities, and genders present. However, although people preach affirmative action and melting pots in current times, many inequality and power issues still abound. One strikingly noticeable example is gender discrimination. Women in the workforce face many challenges like smaller wages, harassment, male privilege in hiring or promotions, and lack of support when pregnant or raising children. One half of the planet is women, and it can be assumed the same for Canada, but they still face judgment at work because they lack the authority to dispute against big corporations or even their male supervisor. It cannot be argued that Canadian women’s status has worsened over the past hundred years, of course, thanks to feminism and activism. However, their status is not as high as it could be. Women as a group first started fighting for workplace equality during the second wave of feminism, from the 1960s to the 1990s. Legislation was approved during the second wave to try to bring gender equality to the workplace. Feminists both collided and collaborated with unions and employers to ensure women received fair treatment in an occupation. Quebec had the same issues, only the province approached the conflict differently than English Canada with its own unique viewpoint. It became clear that women were entering the workplace and did not plan on leaving. Second-wave feminism in Canada shifted power from the government and businesses to women in order to try to bring equality, although the discrimination never completely disappeared.

Max Weber identified bureaucracy with six different types of characteristics. Areas in my life that have been Mcdonaldized can first fit in with the Specialization part. Specialization is where all members of a bureaucracy are assigned specialized roles and tools, an example of this in my life can fit in with the voluntary work I do in hospitals. Everyone who volunteers to work each has their own role to help out with. When I go to stores or to restaurants, hierarchy is something I see the most.

“Management is a process of planning, organisation, command, coordination, and control” (Morgan 2006, p.18). Rational organisation design is a bureaucratic method of management which emphasizes efficiency to achieve the end goal and the management of multiple companies have taken upon this system. Figures such as Frederick Taylor and Henry Ford have both shown and laid a path way for Rational Organisation which has become known as Taylorism and Fordism. The design has received criticism and both Taylor and Ford have been portrayed as villains with Taylor being called “enemy of the working man” (Morgan 2006, p.23) as the system dehumanised workers by taking all of the thought and skill from them and giving it to the managers this is because the tasks given were simple and repetitive. As staff needed little training they became an easily replaceable asset and thus more machine than human.
Weber believed that bureaucracy created stable, and predictable actions and outcomes because it allowed organizations to work in a rational manner, like a machine, and helped account for the fact that humans had only limited intelligence. Though Weber discussed the perfect model of an organization, bureaucracy allows for even imperfect organizations to function in a more reliable and predictable way because it’s structure controls how individuals behave.
Organizations in today’s world need to adapt and overcome many obstacles that are predictable as well as unpredictable. Max Weber outlines the five basic principles of bureaucracy which are as follows: The Division of Labor, Hierarchy of Authority, Written Rules and Regulations, Impersonality Principal, and Technical Qualifications. These basic principals were designed to maximize productivity and assert authority over subordinates in the workforce.
