Swimming Techniques and Physics
Presently scientist are conducting research to help people gain new techniques in swimming. While scientists continue research for new swimming techniques, they must start with early techniques of swimming as a sport and part of life. Learning how to swim is not easy. However, swimming is physics. There are laws, buoyancy, drags, and motions. To become a good swimmer one should take initiative to learn how certain techniques evolved and take an active approach into applying these physics into their own strokes. This report will state a brief summary of the physics of swimming and its mechanics and then continue by describing the technique of the freestyle and backstrokes.
A beginner swimmer must learn how to float in water. This is known as buoyancy, water that exerts an upward force against an object to the weight of the water that would be pushed aside by the object. For example, take three glass bottles the same size, each bottle weighs one pound and can hold five pounds of water. Leave one bottle empty, seal it, and place it in water. Now the bottle floats high in the water with the majority of the bottle above the surface. Then take the second bottle, fill it with three pounds of water, and place the bottle in the water. Second bottle will float vertical in the water. Finally, put five pounds of water in the third bottle and insert it into the water. The third bottle will sink to the bottom but will sink vertical. Therefore, first bottle floats because it weighs one pound but pushes aside ten pounds of water. Thus, it would take some effort to push the empty bottle underwater. This is called buoyancy. Perfecting technique and training methods are evolving to an ever-changing sport. For example, Brooke Bennett's coach "use(s) a set of 10 x 300 meter swims with 20 seconds rest, during which period the swimmers take their pulse and (he) record(s) their times and heart rates. The swims are done at a consistent level of effort with the swimmers instructed to maintain the highest possible heart rate" (Banks, 1997). This method can be done to achieve anaerobic threshold. Another method to achieve this is hypoxic training in which the swimmer controls how often they breath, usually only a couple of times for each 25 meters. Once both the stroke technique and the training methods are optimal for swimmer then the swimming is at its best.
For this experiment, it is important to be familiar with the diving reflex. The diving reflex is found in all mammals and is mainly focused with the preservation of oxygen. The diving reflex refers to an animal surviving underwater without oxygen. They survive longer underwater than on dry land. In order for animals to remain under water for a longer period of time, they use their stored oxygen, decrease oxygen consumption, use anaerobic metabolism, as well as aquatic respiration (Usenko 2017). As stated by Michael Panneton, the size of oxygen stores in animals will also limit aerobic dive capacity (Panneton 2013). The temperature of the water also plays a role. The colder the water is, the larger the diving reflex of oxygen.

In this lab, we explored the theory of maximal oxygen consumption. “Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is defined as the highest rate at which oxygen can be taken up and utilized by the body during severe exercise” (Bassett and Howley, 2000). VO2max is measured in millimeters of O2 consumed per kilogram of body weight per min (ml/kg/min). It is commonly known as a good way to determine a subject’s cardio-respiratory endurance and aerobic fitness level. Two people whom are given the same aerobic task (can both be considered “fit”) however, the more fit individual can consume more oxygen to produce enough energy to sustain higher, intense work loads during exercise. The purpose of this lab experiment was performed to determine the VO2max results of a trained vs. an untrained participant to see who was more fit.
Personal Watercrafts or "jet skis" are basically Personal Watercraft (PWC) are basically small inboard boats able to travel at high speeds due to large amounts of power and very light weight. Alomst all PWC's are under 600 lbs and most of todays PWC's have at least 90 hp.Not only are PWC's some of the fastest water vehicles they are also some of the most maneuverable water vehicles. This is because PWC's propultion is based on a jet that also is it's turning mechanism. When the driver turns the handlebars the jet (via cables) turns in the direction of the handlebars so the stern is pushed in the opposite direction. This allows the driver to turn at a much tighter angle than traditional boats with keels and rudders.The main drawback to this maneuverability is the fact that if there is no thrust coming from the engine the ability to turn is effictively zero meaning that anytime the driver presses the kill switch (a large red button) they lose all ability to steer. This is extremely dangerous whenever an inexperienced person may drive the PWC back to dock or into shore. PWC's have no brakes and have no ablilty to stop other than turning around. They have an extremely efficient ability to hydroplane (when most of the PWC is above water) and it takes most PWC's a few hundred feet to come to a stop after being at full throttle. This is because 600 lbs + a rider is traveling at a very high speed with only minimal friction to slow them down (since PWC's are made to travel with very little friction).
Divers cannot put the equipment on and immediately dive in. Before diving there are a series of procedures the diver and their partners must do before going down. In addition, the further down the diver dives the more pressure pressing down on the diver which lessens the amount of oxygen in the scuba tank. Therefore, the further down the diver dives the less time the diver can spend on the bottom. But now, by far the largest group of divers is “Recreational Divers”. These dives are practiced at depths of less than 130 feet, from these depths, divers can make a straight ascent to the surface. Diving beyond this limit requires advanced training. Also, when diving the diver must take into account the amount of time spent descending and ascending in the water. If the diver descends too quickly the pressure can deflate their lungs and cause problems. Similarly, if they ascend too quickly nitrogen bubbles can form under the diver’s skin causing bends or decompression sickness. This sickness can be extremely harmful and possibly fatal. Even breathing is a more difficult as we must overcome the additional pressure on our body as we expand our chest.
For example, a 100m sprinter would be looking to make gains anaerobically. In order to do this they need to work above their anaerobic threshold. This threshold might be at 80% of their maximum heart rate; therefore anywhere above this intensity anaerobic gains would be made. How far past their threshold the athlete trains, is proportional to the gains in anaerobic fitness that will be made for the 100m sprinter.
