Surfers catching waves and soaking in the sun could have more historical meaning behind it than it appears. Surfing is a subculture that still occurs today, as you can see when traveling to the beach. It emerged in the 1400s from Peru as it was originally needed for fishing and training. After the 1400s, surfing was used as a way to stay in shape and compete against rival communities. Not only were surfboards used to ride the waves, but they were also a symbol of status between communities. There were three original surfboards and whoever had the most exclusive one was seen as royalty. During the 1930s through 1950s, the surfboard gained many transformations that led to surfing being more accessible, pleasurable, and affordable to greater communities. …show more content…
They are very fond of helping others and sharing their customs with others in the community. Surfers maintain a relaxed and carefree attitude while maintaining a serene outlook on life. Fashion is very casual for them as they tend to have long, wavy hair with swimsuits, flip-flops, tank tops, t-shirts, shorts, and wetsuits. Typically, surfers are found in small coastal towns and cities and keep a close circle of friends. Surfers have influenced a type of music called surf rock and has allowed many big bands to form. A Surfers typical day includes going to the beach and catching waves while enjoying the sunshine and environment. In their free time, they participate in campaigns and organizations that work to help clean the beaches. They are very particular about their behavior and how it could affect the environment. For example, they try to make decisions carefully so that their carbon footprint is reduced. This could include walking to the beach instead of driving and picking a surfboard that is manufactured in an environmentally friendly way. In addition, they choose to surf in local areas to reduce travel, which eliminates a carbon
Once you are born, you become a part of a larger group. You will grow up starting at a point in your parent's life and then over time they or even you will change the direction of your families subculture in whatever country you all live in. In America, People strive for the best. Not all get it, but somehow or someone will push that family into a situation where they can move up in the world. Over the years America has came to a point where most jobs pay well and mostly anyone can be considered a middle class resident. In America this is considered normal to the general public. Being normal and striving to be normal is the focus most people try to reach within their lifetimes. Normality is a subculture in itself.
A subculture can consist of any small group outside the central or key majority group. The groups can range from an organized crime group, to an Asian American group, to a religious group, to even a hippie commune. The main focus of this unit is the immigrant subcultures. The immigrant subculture that is becoming more commonplace every day in the United States is the Mexican Americans. Mexican Americans have many religious traditions, ceremonies, customs, as well as art and music forms. There are also various cultural traditions. Mexican Americans have their own identity on the contrary they still have distinct American characteristics.
...varying styles like Hapkido, Jiu Jitsu. We also get to go to international tournaments to compete. This is interesting because we get to understand how different people live and to learn more about their culture. MMA is not just for hard work but you gain friends along the way not just with the students but the instructors.
In America, we’d like to believe that our “unalienable rights” can’t be taken away from us, but the reality couldn’t be farther from the truth. A subculture of people, called Juggalos have been prosecuted only because of a misinterpretation on what being a Juggalo entails. The definition of a Juggalo depends on if you’re asking an artist, a fan, or an anti-fan, but you’ll find that they have a more positive affect on individuals and the community even though a small group of people are the complete opposite.
During the sixties Americans saw the rise of the counterculture. The counterculture, which was a group of movements focused on achieving personal and cultural liberation, was embraced by the decade’s young Americans. Because many Americans were members of the different movements in the counterculture, the counterculture influenced American society. As a result of the achievements the counterculture movements made, the United States in the 1960s became a more open, more tolerant, and freer country.
Subcultures exist all over America. Some are accepted, while others are not. An interesting subculture I came across was bodybuilding. Bodybuilding is “a type of weight training applied in conjunction with sound nutritional practices to alter the shape or form of one's body” (Bodybuilding.com). Bodybuilding is a sport that can be either recreational or competitive.
The dizzying laser lights flashed in synchronicity with the pulsating bass of the music that bounced off the psychedelic warehouse walls. As my boyfriend and I mentally attempted to organize the chaos surrounding us, we pushed our way through the crowd of spasmodic lunatics who contorted their bodies in time with the music and lights. We located a couch in a room covered with cartoonesque, hyper-graphic graffiti. An androgynous man sat himself at my feet and began massaging my thighs, while a girl with her eyes rolled back into her head demanded that my boyfriend give her a massage. Just then the deejay laid his head in my lap, told me he was in love with me, and placed a bitter pill on my tongue. This certainly was the most bizarre method of earning three graduate credit hours I could imagine.
In Subculture Theory many theorists were interested in explaining delinquent gangs, which were believed to be the most common form of delinquency. The Subculture Theory was made up of several different theories that were all related to each other. Subculture theories provided explanations of how groups of individuals develop similar values and rationales for behavior (Williams & McKay, 2014). One theory within Subculture Theory was called the delinquent subculture theory by Albert Cohen. Another theory in the Subculture Theory was the differential opportunity formed by Richard Cloward and Lloyd Ohlin. The third theory by Walter Miller used direct observation of social groups in their natural setting. All four theories were interest in of the Subculture Theory could develop (Williams & Mckay, 2014). The last major theory was very different theories and was created by Wolfgang and Ferracuti. All these theories in the Subculture Theory were very different but were all related in some way.

The sixties was a decade of liberation and revolution, a time of great change and exciting exploration for the generations to come. It was a time of anti-war protests, free love, sit-ins, naked hippie chicks and mind-altering drugs. In big cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Paris, there was a passionate exchange of ideas, fiery protests against the Vietnam War, and a time for love, peace and equality. The coming together of like-minded people from around the world was spontaneous and unstoppable. This group of people, which included writers, musicians, thinkers and tokers, came to be known as the popular counterculture, better known as hippies. The dawning of the Age of Aquarius in the late sixties was more than just a musical orgy. It was a time of spiritual missions to fight for change and everything they believed in. Freedom, love, justice, equality and peace were at the very forefront of this movement (West, 2008). Some wore beads. Some had long hair. Some wore tie-dye and others wore turtle-neck sweaters. The Hippie generation was a wild bunch, to say the least, that opened the cookie jar of possibilities politically, sexually, spiritually and socially to forever be known as one of the most memorable social movements of all time (Hippie Generation, 2003).
Culture constitutes common characteristics of a particular group of people or a society such as behaviors, beliefs, objects, and any other characteristics of such a people. It is thus through culture, that groups of people define their unique characteristics that conform to their shared values and contribute towards building the society as sociologist suggests. Therefore, culture includes different societal aspects such as the customs, language, norms, values, tools, rules, products, technologies, morals, institutions, and organizations. The terms organizations and institutions will thus refer to the set of rules associated with specific activities within the society. For instance, healthcare, education, security, family, religion, and work
The Gathering The sunlight is blinding as I stumble out of the tent. The heat is suffocating. The surroundings are foreign, completely wrong. I am met with terrifying gang of freaks, ninjas, and clowns.
When thinking about the subcultures that existed in my high school I first wonder what the term subculture means. It is a group within society that is separated by its different values, norms, and life styles (Ferris, p.86). The different subcultures also known as clique that affected each student differently when I was in high school were the ones that emulated similar cultural standards making it more likely for certain students to become friends and more likely to inspire the same aspects of their attitude, behaviors and dress with in those cliques. Now that I understand that the term subculture means a culture within a culture. I can start listing the different subcultures that was in my high school.
There are individuals that live in fear of showing their true identity to the world because they simply fear that society won’t accept them for having a different sexual orientation. Society advocates that individuals should be able to be proud of who they are, but yet they judge homosexuals for being different. People are taught not to judge others based on their race or religion, so why do they still discriminate against homosexuals? The homosexual subculture is not accepted by society, looked down upon, and misjudged; however, they are human beings and deserve to be treated equally.
