Supplement Might Not Be Beneficial As You Think
People eat food for many reasons. For example, taste, culture, cost, time, and emotions of people can affect what they eat. These foods provide energy for, growth, movement, thinking, and metabolism. Furthermore, a good nutrition can reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer, stroke, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis (Shearer). According to the National Institutes of Health, "more than one-third of all Americans take these supplements" (“Multivitamin/Mineral Supplements”). But, taking supplements and vitamin instead of eating healthy food, is not a suitable replacement for a healthy diet. However, we have people that are lactose intolerant. This means that in their body, they lack an enzyme (lactose) and cannot break down lactose into glucose and galactose. They can still eat food that are lactose free and contain a lactose defense formula such as: soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or anything that have the word "lactaid" in it. Which means that they have the enzyme to make it easier for the digestive tract to digest this food and absorb beneficial nutrients from it. This is what makes them use supplements and vitamin to aid their body to break down dairy products. We also have people that are pregnant that lack iron and folic acid. Also, older adults and vegans need supplements and vitamin to obtain nutrients that they may lack. Otherwise, healthy people can get their nutrients from their daily foods. For example, dairy food is comprised of high protein, calcium, potassium, and vitamin D which is found in milk, and cheese (Shearer). Vegetables and fruits are common in low in fat, sodium, and calories; They also are high in potassium, fiber, vitamin C, and folate which is a B vitamin that helps in making DNA and RNA (Shearer). Macronutrients are the energy- containing, needed in higher amounts, also it provides calories, like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Micronutrients are the non- energy containing, needed in smaller amounts, like vitamins and minerals, that doesn’t provide calories, which give us the energy in our human body (Shearer). We need the vitamins and minerals in our body to use the carbohydrate, fat, and protein. In addition, vitamins and minerals are part of the enzymes that speed up the chemical reaction in the body. Their deficiencies can lead to: fatigue, stunted growth, weak bones, and organ damage of the eyes, skin, and liver (Shearer). Although, micronutrients are involved in supplements and vitamins tablets. Supplements are not made for poor diet quality, example if you are eating fast food, and taking your supplement that doesn’t mean that you are in a healthy diet. Some people take supplements for nutritional benefits, but don't realize they could be getting more nutrients by consuming whole foods. For example, if you are going to a store choose the grains that has "whole grains" because it contains the germ, the endosperm, and the bran, also, because it's an important source of fiber, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and selenium, but if you are taking for example a wheat germ supplement, you are losing nutritional
Lactase is an enzyme found in the digestive system. It is essential to the complete digestion of sugar in whole milk and milk products. Lactase specifically breaks down lactose, a complex sugar. Lactase cannot be absorbed by the body unless it is broken down by lactase into glucose and galactose. According to webMD, “Lacking lactase in their intestines, a person consuming dairy products may experience the symptoms of lactose intolerance…Abdominal cramping, flatulence (gas) and diarrhea can occur when a lactose intolerant person consumes milk products.” ("Lactase Enzyme oral : Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Pictures, Warnings & Dosing - WebMD", n.d.) Lactose intolerance (LI) is the inability of some humans to digest the lactose sugar contained in most dairy products and foods made with dairy products. LI has numerous readily apparent physical symptoms such as gas, cramps and diarrhea (Houts 110). More importantly, LI may lead to malnutrition in those people affected because of the loss of milk's important nutrients. Not everyone is affected by LI. In fact, genetic background rather than any other health or cultural factor seems to best predict LI. One piece of evidence I have comes from a document called, "Understanding the Value of Multivitamin." In this document the author, Komaroff, A.L, says, "... For example, a deficiency of Vitamin C causes scurvy." In this line Komaroff is stating how Vitamin C can cause scurvy, which is a disease that makes us lose our teeth and so much more. In the same document they then stated, "... Such severe vitamin Deficiency are rarely seen in the developed countries. However, eating foods rich in vitamins still brings benefits… " So even if you wouldn't take multivitamins to get rid of vitamin deficiency diseases you can still take it to rid of other major killers. Without lactase, the body does not have the ability to break down lactose, which leads to a person having an upset stomach and diarrhea. Adults are more likely to be lactose intolerant than children because of the metabolic change in the body (Dritsas).
