Introduction Modern Drama is our focus as a good example to be under consideration. We can define the terms of Drama and Modern literally as we find them in Merriam-Webster Dictionary " a piece of writing that tells a story and is performed on a stage" as a definition of Drama, while Modern defined as " relating to the present time or the recent past : happening, existing, or developing at a time near the present time", but the definition of Modern Drama, a term of literature, is slightly different. Modern Drama is the Western progress of drama that was founded at the late ninetieth century. Modern Drama was influenced by Henrik Ibsen who was the great Norwegian dramatist as the father who were flourishing the Modern Drama. He handled the ethical and social problems in a logical manner. Ibsen thought that real drama should discuss human emotions and sensations. His influence appeared on the themes of the plays that was written at that time. Modernist writers have started writing about the real life and ordinary people. They wrote about High class , then Middle class, down to Working class. Thus the modernist authors neglected the melodrama, romantic and classical features that they inherited from their predecessors . That made the modern drama close to realism. Realism is one of the movements of the modern drama that was established by Ibsen which means to introduce everything as it appears in the real life through the real image of the characters, setting, and the themes of the play. Another movement which appeared in modern drama was known as Symbolism. Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard is the most famous author who used Symbolism in his plays. In Symbolism things cannot be expressed through rational means ... ... middle of paper ... ...e river; and the ceiling is not so lofty as it would be in an older house of the same pretension. The windows are open, giving access to a balcony with flowers in pots. If you stand with your face to the windows, you have the fireplace on your left and the door in the right-hand wall close to the corner nearest the windows. )3.1-7) We can see the idea of class discrimination in the play through the second act when Eliza wants to leave the place and Higgins tries to tempt her with chocolate and diamonds and she have bowed to him because of the class that she belongs to. Classes are substantial in Britain, they are able to identifying their identity from the appearance, the personality, the behavior, and the language of the person like what Higgins was doing. He was able to define Eliza's identity and behavior from her language and attitude.
