What do we learn about life in the 18th century and how successfully does the writer convey this information whilst telling us a good story?
The story is set in the 18th century and includes factual information which plays a vital part in the storyline. It uses this information whilst entertaining the readers with a fictional storyline. It is based on one thing in particular, hence the title "The Coram Boy", this is The Coram Hospital.
A main factor in the storyline is the way the writer portrays society's attitude to poverty in the 18th century. The poor people were treated tremendously different to higher classed people. A lot of people were even living on the streets. For example, "He picked his way through the hordes of homeless children who congregated at evening, like the starlings, to look for the most sheltered niche into which they could huddle for the night." The writer uses immense detail to help the reader visualise the scene. She also uses a simile to help the reader compare the circumstances in which the children are in. This shows that the poor children had to live on the streets and fend for themselves during the 18th century. Another example involves a brief description of the city in which the poor people lived in. This is "nor when he smelt the stench of open sewers and foraging pigs, and the manure of horses and mules" This gives a clear example of the state of the city. It is unclean and rancid and the writer includes this whilst keeping to her fictional storyline.
Another factor in the storyline is society's attitude to class differences. Higher classed people were never allowed to socialise with people below their class. For example, Alice who is a young girl born to a rich high-classed family queries why she cannot marry Thomas, a lower classed boy. This is answered by "'Cos he's not a gentleman." Higher classed people were not permitted to marry out of their class. If they did it would be considered shameful and parents would often disown their children. Another example is, "Never was he more ashamed than when he saw their eyes scan his heavy jacket and breeches, his hob-nailed boots and cotton shirt and these were his best clothes" this is when Thomas visits Alexander's house. Alexander is much higher classed. It shows how he feels to be in the company of those higher classed.

Many families such as the Cunninghams were poor during this time. “He didn’t forget his lunch, he didn’t have any.” (Lee 26). Walter Cunningham and his family don’t have an abundant amount of money, so Walter didn’t bring lunch to school because they can’t afford it. Poverty influenced their behavior, by making them into better people, they never accept anything that they can't pay back. “One morning Jem and I found a pile of stovewood in the backyard.” (Lee 26). The Cunninghams can’t pay in money so they pay back in supplies. Poverty makes the Cunninghams stronger and more friendly to others. Another character that symbolizes poverty is the Ewell family. “None of them had done an honest day’s of work in his recollection.” (Lee 40). The Ewells are poor, but they still didn’t work to earn money or trade. They lived on the town dump with varmints and trash. All the money they received went straight to alcohol. Poverty made the Ewells lazy and a disappointment to the community. Overall, poverty is throughout the book and is symbolized by the Ewell and Cunningham family. The dialogue in this story seems to capture the tone of the Victorian period. The characters appear to reflect Victorian attitudes and behaviors. Throughout the novel reference is made to judgment, punishment and retribution.
She begins her story by using a personal experience with a homeless person a couple years ago. She gives examples of how they had a home before and that they grew up in a home with there family. She also uses the descriptions on what homes are to people and that they are just real-estate now. She then expresses her concern for this stereotype by using positive word to explains her feelings towards homes and negative words to express her pity towards the homeless. For example, in paragraphs 2 and 7 on page 191 she uses words such as “alone,” “adrift,” “afraid,” and “violence” to show her pity towards the situation that homeless people are in. in paragraph 4 on page 191 she uses words like “love,” and “everything” to show her feelings towards homes. In Victorian times, one who came from a wealthy and respectable family was considered to be a gentleman. This is clear in numerous characters in the novel, who are immediately perceived to be gentlemen as they boast a large amount of money and dress in the finest clothes. One example, Compeyson, uses this to get a reduced sentence in court, as Magwitch says ‘one, the younger, well brought up, who will be spoke to as such’. This highlights the importance of social class in the Victorian era and it is clear to see here that the justice system is very much more favourable to the higher social ranks, deciding how they would get treated and addressed, and that the punishment is not dependent on the crime, rather the individual at trial’s background and upbringing. Dickens has shown that the Victorian concept of a gentleman is all about wealth and social ranking, not the characteristics we see in a gentleman today.
The theme of the play is the issues within the Victorian society, which mainly focuses on the topic of marriage. This is demonstrated when Jack asked Gwendolen for marriage. This system of social status obligated and forced people to stick to what "fate" and society had in store for them. For example, peasants could only be peasants and that was the only occupation they could be. Individuals in higher social ranks such as kings, some knights and people of the church looked down at people at lower ranks. Members of the upper class lived in grand mansions on great estates; they kept busy with parties, dances, and keeping track of what other people in the same social class were doing. The only career for a woman in this society was marriage. Society wives were expected to represent their husbands with impeccable manners and grace and provide no hint of scandal.
