Introduce yourself and the objectives of today’s workshop. Acknowledge that you appreciate participants giving up their personal time to be here. Ask each person to stand, state her name, what position she advises, and the name of her favorite superhero. Each person in this room has different experiences and comes from a different place. We are all different and unique. However, our Kappa bond and commonality of volunteering as advisers bring us all here today. Paper Markers 35 minutes II. Building a Team A team that works well together is more effective, productive, and successful, not to mention happier and more fun to work with! Each superhero needs to have the best vantage point in his or her Gotham City. This enables the superhero to see the citizens and city around him or her and identify those in need. Working as a team, you will construct a superhero tower using the supplies provided in your bag. Work together to see who can build the tallest tower in the time provided. You may only use the materials inside of the construction bag (not the bag itself). The marshmallow must be at the very top of the tower. You will only have 10 minutes to construct your tower, which must be able to stand on its own for five seconds without falling and without anything supporting it. At the end of 10 minutes, you will be told to stop building. You will put your tower into position and, at my instruction, you will release the tower, measure its height, and verify that it stays standing for a minimum of five seconds. Divide participants into groups of six. Instruct participants to begin building. Give them a two-minute warning before time is up. At the end of 10 minutes, tell them they will have one minute to place their towers in position for testing and measuring. Count down from five and have participants release their towers. When Odysseus went off to fight in the Trojan War, he left his trusted friend, Mentor, in charge of his household and his son’s education. Ever since, Mentor’s name has been attached to the education of someone by a more experienced person. Oftentimes, you don’t choose your mentee; your mentee chooses you. In your case, you asked to serve as a mentor. You are a mentor for the officer you advise. You may provide a different perspective that your advisee may not have seen or help her find the right path to pursue. However, while you may provide all of the resources, your advisee may still forge ahead. Be that as it may, you are giving her things to think about and raising red flags that will help her plan more thoroughly in the future.
