To identify one superman from another, people look at their specific powers. For sure, everyone in his/her life dreamed or still dreams to have different superpowers and become a hero. Spider-Man is a superhero not just because of his powers but many other features, which all superheroes have in common. Spider-Man is known all over the world as a fictional superhero. There are many T-shirts with his pictures, costumes and toys in shops. Everyone knows about his amazing abilities. However, he obtained a title of the superhero not just because he can climb the walls and shoot webs from his wrists. The first time people met Spider-Man was in comics in 1962 (Kistler, 2012) where he appeared as one of the members of the famous Avengers team. It took readers by storm. His personality and backstory impressed many fans which made Marvel create his own series, "The Amazing Spider-Man" in 1963 (Kistler, 2012). The first Spider-Man movie surprised the film community with the single largest U.S. opening weekend gross revenues in history and the hero became famous in the world.
Superhero is a complex term which consists of different features. Superhero can be a superman, meaning that he has powers and abilities far beyond those of ordinary mortals (pg. 11, Morris, 2005). Indeed, Spider-Man has incredible powers: clear vision, superhuman strength and super-fast reflexes. He can also cling to different surfaces and shoot webs. Besides, he develops a precognitive sense that warns him of approaching danger (Raimi, 2002). That is why, for sure, Spider-Man can be called a superman but not a superhero yet. Spider-Man is a brilliant example of the true superhero as he kept his humanity in spite of all difficulties. He learnt how to combine his life as a person and the superhero, deal with all problems without losing his love and friends. He is not perfect but he strives his best to do good and help others. Spider-Man’s powers do not make him a good hero. It is his bravery and kindness that leads him to save people. He never break his promises and always followed his Uncle’s advice "with great power comes great responsibility."

Webster Dictionary has exactly 5 definitions under the word hero and still no two people explain heroism the same. Superman and Captain America are a glimpse of the fictional characters society titles a hero. Firefighters and Military portray heroism each day in the lives of every civilian. As Sullivan and Venter stated “individuals are referred to as ‘heroes’ for seemingly different reasons” and even through endless studies the adjectives referring heroes is ever changing.
Not all superheroes wear capes. As an example, in the novel, ‘The Hobbit’, Bilbo Baggins goes from Hobbit to Hero as the book progresses. Throughout the novel, Bilbo fends off a variety of monsters, from goblins to a killer dragon! At first, he wouldn’t even leave his little hobbit hole, but he seeked out a mass murderer’s weak point! That is amazing! How did he manage to do that? Well, he developed the characteristics of a good ol’ hero along the way, those being strong and brave, clever and intelligent, and the ability to be selfless in all of the right situations.
We are currently living in the Golden Age of Superheroes. They dominate our cultural life, and have become seemingly permanent fixtures in modern media.
