I am applying to this summer internship to become a part of the team that , and to ultimately gain skills that will be useful for my future graduate studies. Specifically, I want to apply my knowledge of biology and chemistry outside the classroom, hone my skills of the scientific method, and acquire a deeper insight into the process of designing experiments. I have recognized that the Oregon Health and Science University provides an environment where students can flourish intellectually, and the valuable lab experiences and collaboration opportunities draw me into becoming an intern here. In particular, I have become highly interested in the work associated with the Gibbs lab after reading about the studies and research involved. I recently read about the ongoing projects relating to Paired …show more content…
Therefore, this internship will provide me with a refined understanding of the duties of a biomedical engineer and rising scientist. In addition, I hope to learn about the process of creating experimental designs and conducting personal projects. This will allow me to explore my technical and reasoning skills and strengthen my ability to formulate design plans confidently. I also would like to learn about the process of examining scientific journals in detail, since this will be highly relevant for my potential post-graduate research studies. I have garnered relevant experiences that have influenced my interest in pursuing an internship in this scientific field. In terms of academic experience, I have taken General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry courses, which have enhanced my critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Also, I took an introductory biology course that fostered my appreciation for the complexities that lie within intricate life processes. In my Chemistry laboratory experiences, I have practiced various techniques of data collection and analyses, including recrystallization, filtration, synthesis, distillation, titration, chromatography, and spectral
Internships completed by students in certain degree programs are quite popular in most colleges and universities. An internship is used so classroom based learning in a degree program can be applied to practical situations in the real world (Jordan, Burns, Bedard & Barringer, 2007). When students are placed with an agency, there is a real possibility that a portion of students will witness actions they believe is unethical or illegal. During a study conducted within four universities, many students that participated in an internship program within the criminal justice system reported that they had observed behavior they suspected to be illegal behavior for a law enforcement agency. (Jordan et al. 2007). Due to this ongoing problem, colleges
Biomedical engineering is a branch of science that connects engineering sciences with biological sciences that started around the 1940s (Citron & Nerem, 2004). Biomedical engineering is the discipline that promotes learning in engineering, biology, chemistry, and medicine. The objective for biomedical engineers is to enhance human health by incorporating engineering and biomedical sciences to solve problems. Some of the accomplishments made from biomedical engineering are prosthetics, robotic and laser surgery, implanted devices, imaging devices, nanotheranostics and artificial intelligence. As we head towards the future, biomedical engineering is anticipated to become an even greater part of the medical industry and bring about innovating
Internships provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical and basic knowledge gained in the classroom. During the field placement period, the agency supervisor becomes the primary teacher, aside from the clients, in the student's day-to-day learning. The supervisor is responsible for coordinates the student's overall experience by helping the student integrate the various pieces of the Field Internship. However, to make the placement, a positive experience supervisor need to be aware of student’s strengths, and learning needs to match assignments accordingly.
As a laboratory prep, I was able to set up labs for freshmen and sophomore biology classes. Also, I made visits to my professor’s labs to observe the procedures graduate students used for their experiments and I loved it. After completion of my freshman year, I participated in the “Maternal Child Health Pipeline Training Program” that following summer. I conducted field research that focused on the public health of mothers and children in rural communities. The fall semester of sophomore year, I shadowed graduate students studying breast cancer cells. Later that same year, I began my own research with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Upon my junior year, I was accepted into the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medical Program in Auburn, Alabama. At the same time, I was accepted into the Tropical and Infectious Diseases Association in Iquitos, Peru. I was able to study abroad and work in a lab focusing on the negative gram bacteria that was in the water of the poor community of Iquitos, Peru. All of the opportunities I was able to be a part of from my freshman year till this present day has reconfirmed my passion and contributed to my specific area of research and the population I want to
I am writing to apply for the dbAchieve Sophomore Internship program in Cary, NC. As a Computer Science and English major at UNC Chapel Hill, I am very interested in the intersections between innovation, business, and culture. Deutsche’s program is one of the best examples of this intersection. By providing an internship that emphases inclusion, globalism, and diversity, as well as delivering a world class training in new and innovative technology, Deutsche exemplifies exactly what I desire out of my internship experience. Learning about other cultures and communities has been a constant drive for why I do things throughout my life.
“So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” This aphorism was said by the enlightened Morrie Schwartz. I agree wholeheartedly with this and it is one of the teeming reasons that I, Haya Harb, have aspirations to one day be a Doctor.
Having spent the better part of six summers hiking, cooking, orienteering, and practicing archery on the trails of Huddart Park, California, summer camp became a very precious time of my life. When I entered high school, I began working as a Unit Aide at my camp which meant I had the privilege to now teach young girls a whole slew of tasks such as survival skills, first aid, and knife skills. While attending Woodside Priory High School, I heard about similar activities such as archery and overnights that Mountain Camp counselors hosted. Chris Gregory encouraged me to look into the camp and see if it was something I might take interest in, and I soon discovered that it definitely captured my attention. I adore working with kids and would especially
