In the article “Was There Really a Noah’s Ark Flood?”, many debatable questions are answered. The passage goes over scientific reasons that prove why the flood must have occurred sometime in history. The passage gives insight into scientific discoveries that could have only resulted due to a worldwide flood, as mentioned in Genesis. “I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made” (Genesis 7:4, NIV). Many topics are answered about why there was a worldwide flood, but many doubtful questions still remain about the exact details regarding the flood and Noah’s Ark. First of all, the most significant scientific evidence we have for the flood is the fossils that have been found in …show more content…
sedimentary layers throughout the world.
In order for fossils to form, pressure and sediments have to come together rapidly in order to fossilize the object. Millions of fossils throughout the world have been discovered, and there is no other explanation other than a great flood. Genesis 7:20, NIV says “The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits”. This verse supports the fact of scientists’ discoveries of ocean fossils on mountaintops. Next, scientists believe in the term “Pangea”, or that the world was once a “super continent.” However, scientists believe that there was a global catastrophe that caused separate continents to form. The only thing in history that could have created separate continents throughout the world is a worldwide flood due to its rain, water being pushed out of the ground, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Last of all, sediment layers can be seen throughout the entire earth. The Grand Canyon and other smaller canyons are thought to be the result of the worldwide flood. The sedimentary layers across the continents show that it was a global flood and not a local flood. Overall, many scientific discoveries point to the fact that the worldwide flood must
have occurred. Furthermore, what strikes me as interesting is how all of the animals on board did not eat each other or Noah and his family. However, when researching it more in depth, the answer becomes clearer. First of all, God promised Noah that He would deliver his entire family through the flood. “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation” (Genesis 7:1, NIV). This means that God would not let anything happen to Noah and his family, including the animals hurting them. Also, when God instructed all of the animals to come aboard the ship, He could have gotten the friendly animals of each kind. For example, how different dog breeds are friendlier than others, but they are all still classified as dogs. Noah also built separate rooms for the animals, allowing them not to harm each other. Overall, God was with Noah and his family throughout the entire voyage, and ultimately, He was the One in charge of the animals and their behavior. In conclusion, many scientific discoveries lead to the fact that there was a global flood, and though we might not understand every detail, God was certainly with Noah and his family.
In “Noah Count and the Arkansas Ark” the author demonstrates the value of education as one not just in books or math. The author uses education that doesn’t just include a classroom. The Dad has been around farming for a long time and is a farmer, so he knows when it will rain. The dad uses this experience from farming to have the wits to prepare for a flood because he knows it’s coming. So, the dad has learned from experience. The son’s opinion of his dad’s sense will change throughout the story.
Column 1 on Tablet 11 begins the Sumero-Babylonian Flood narrative (Gardner 226). The sage Utnapishtim from Shurippak (100 miles south of Babylon), says:
It rained for forty days and nights during the Great Flood while Noah with his family and animals stayed on the ark.
The disaster theory, Gould claims, is an example of good science. It has testable evidence and has an impact on studies in other fields of science, it develops further and explains why the extinction of dinosaurs occurred simultaneously with other events. This theory suggests that a large comet hit the Earth sixty five million years ago, causing the cloud of dust to rise into the sky and to block sunlight. As a result, world temperatures went down significantly, the ice age bega...
The Biblical account in Genesis, probably written by Moses around 1500 B.C., and the story of creation and flood in Ovid's Metamorphosis, written somewhere between 8 and 17 A.D., have weathered the criticism and become the most famous. The Genesis account, however, may be the most prominent of the two accounts. Within these accounts, are many similarities, as well as differences, which make these two writings well respected, while holding their own in the literary world. Though both accounts of the creation and flood are well respected on their own, when compared side to side, they are drastically different.
Comparing each record of the flood can reveal how different cultural and religious backgrounds explain events of the world, and despite the stories differences, their similarities prove
On our planet, phenomena’s occur occasionally in nature. Tornadoes, earthquakes, and flashfloods are all types of phenomena’s that could occur. Most of these mysterious events are small and go unnoticed; however, on a rare occasion these sorts of event can be horrendous. One such occasion occurred back around 4,000 BC (Werner Keller, 48). As the story goes, God’s population was growing rapidly on earth. At this point, he had been growing bored with the same people on earth so he made sure no man would live past the age of 120. Given this time, the people of earth started to take advantage of the human race; these acts of selfishness disgusted God. He decided to destroy everything on earth. A man by the name of Noah had lived his life by God’s nature, which eventually led to a close relationship between the two. God had told Noah to build a boat with exact measurements. God had instructed Noah to put two of every kind of animal into the boat; one had to be male and the other female. Then God told Noah to get into the boat with his family, their families, and the animals. Then for forty days and forty nights the clouds seemed to have poured endless amounts of water onto the earth (Genesis 6:1-9). Floods rushed through the landscape, destroying everything in its path. The waters were higher than the tallest mountains, standing above the highest peaks. All living things on earth had died. The water covered the earth at this level for five months (Paul S. Taylor, 1). In time the water began to dry up. Eventually Noah was able to leave the ship and release all he had brought with him. From this point, evolution occurs.
...s why God’s son died on the cross for all. Lastly, Catastrophe in comparison with Christ relates to the global flood that was to come. The flood was a judgment due to man’s wickedness as well as a message of God’s grace and salvation. Ham then concluded how “observational sciences” look at the things we can see in repeatable events now and compares it to “historical science” which uses evidence gathered to determine what happened in the past. Due his comparison he states “we can never truly have “knowledge” regarding the historical sciences.” In summation, the debate aided me in creating a more sophisticated analysis on Genesis. It led me to take away my own interpretation of the text in Genesis 1-3, through listening to Ken Ham, and his young-earth view.
In conclusion, many ancient literature writers such as those of Genesis, Gilgamesh and Metamorphoses wrote their own detailed accounts of the Creation, flood, and fall. All three of the author's perspectives of the events are all distinctly characterized but, dramatically different. That fact in itself, the notion that we, the readers can trace hints that tie the three stories together, makes literature and the ways that we interpret it, amazing. I personally believe that the Genesis interpretation of all three the creation, the flood and the fall are all accurate and factual accounts of the event. I continually thank Christ for his redemption through His blood for my sin.
For centuries people have believed in Creationism which is the idea that the Earth, its inhabitants, and everything in the universe was created and governed by a supernatural power. According to Branch and Scott, the biggest influence on this idea is the Bible and more specifically the Book of Genesis which presents “creation ex nihilo (“from nothing”), a world flood, [and] a relatively recent inception of the Earth” (27). Branch and Scott are of course referring to the Judeo-Christian biblical creation stories of “Adam and Eve, the Garden of Eden, the Flood and Noah’s Ark” which, in the seventeenth-century Europe, were “generally considered to by literally true” (Park 24). From these stories the idea that except for the “great flood, the Earth and its inhabitants were pretty much the same now a...
Since the beginning of human kind there has been a cloud of wonder of how our planet was formed. Scientist interested in this field through out the years have developed many different theories to how our planet came about. Before the Twentieth Century, scientists and geologists thought that mountain structures were due to the massive tightening of the earth caused by the gradual cooling of molten rocks. In 1900, American scientist Joseph Le Conte, published an article in the Appleton's Popular Scientific Monthly. He described that the problem in understanding mountain building was establishing the cause of sideways pressure. It was not until 1910, that an American Geologist named F.B.Taylor, proposed the idea of a continental drift. Other scientists dismissed Taylor's idea, because there was just not enough proof. However, Taylor's idea was then backed up by a German scientist named Alfred Wegener. He proposed that the continents surrounding the Atlantic Ocean, Africa and South America fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. His broad range of studies enabled him to incorporate his theory of Plate Tectonics. Wegener, later in 1915 while in the German military published his idea that interpreted how his continental drift theory worked. He proposed that a huge landmass called Pangea, meaning ("all land") existed 200 million years ago. He furthered explained that this super continent began to drift apart very slowly throughout millions of years into what it looks like now. Wegener went on several expeditions through out his life to the continents of South America and Africa.
In the Mesopotamian version: the gods apparently displeased with the evils of mankind decided to destroy it by means of a great flood. Ea, the god of wisdom and subtlety, was privy to their council and warned Utnapishtim, the Babylonian Noah, of the coming disaster. Utnapishtim was told to build a ship thirty cubits long and thirty cubits wide. Provision it and put in it specimens of every living thing. Then to board it with his family and possessions and launch it on the waters.
Life and death can be confusing, why? Nobody knows exactly what happens when we die. People are scared to think about what happens after death, so they are prone to create theories and make up stories. Many of the stories and theories of the afterlife are taught through religion, For believers and nonbelievers alike, this leaves many to question the science behind the theory, and others to live in fear of death. Throughout history religious theories have created wars and disputes between man, in schools and even in homes. It is because of this, religion can be questionable and at times an unacceptable way of life.
Other similarities closely tie these two Flood Myths almost mirroring the symbolic ideas within both stories. The number seven is very significant in both of these stories. In the story of Utnapishtim, the Boat he built was finished on the seventh day. Also the rain that flooded the earth, stopped on the seventh day. In the Hebrew story of Noah, the waters of the flood were upon the earth seven days after Noah constructed the arc. After the earth was flooded and the rain subsided, during two seven day instances, Noah sent forth a dove to determine if dry land existed nearby. The two stories also showed that the Gods gave specific instructions down to the dimension regarding the construction of the two boats and both men were ordered to keep the blood line of animals alive by sparing the lives of a male a female being of each species.
The continental drift theory is a theory first proposed by a German geologist and meteorologist Alfred Wegener in 1915. This theory suggests that parts of the Earth’s crust which are called continents were slowly drifting above a liquid core. He didn’t randomly come up with this idea with whim, there are actually some solid evidence to support this theory. For example, the boundaries of South America’s eastern coastline and Africa’s western coastline are seemingly matched on a world map. Also, you can find similar animals and plants fossils around different continent shores, like the fossil of Mesosaurus was found both in South Africa and Brazil. (Rejoined continents [This Dynamic Earth, USGS].) Not only fossil proves this theory, but also same living animals are found on two different continents. Furthermore, Wegener found out that same rocks and mountain ranges begin on one continent, and end at one coastline; but on another continent cross the ocean, there are similar rocks and mountain ranges appear. For instance, people found rocks with same types and rocks in Greenland, Ireland, Scotland, and Norway which are places really far away from each other. Last but not least, base on climatic evidence, scientists later pointed out that there are glacial striations in South America, Africa, Madagascar, Arabia, India, Anta...
