2.2 million. That’s the number of incarcerated people in the United States. 2.2 million prisoners that we pay for with our money. We are now often referred to as the “incarceration nation” and have started to build more prisons than schools. The Vera Institute of Justice discovered in February of 2012 that the 1980s the prison population with have risen by 700%. In the video clip, we watched comedian Kamau Bell travel to San Quentin prison. This prison is different than others because they are creating lots of programs and activities to help reform the inmate’s lives.

Thus, there has been more media coverage in recent years. In some ways, it seemed like he just wanted to give some people the chance to do well but, if they don’t have the right tools or mindset, they won’t be able to dwell outside of the prison walls.
Due to overcrowding, there was a push to release the inmates that were low level offenders, some were even granted pardons. Sure, this was great to lower the population by a little bit, but I saw this as a way to make it seem like our prison system is doing well and that these inmates are going to prosper outside of the prison walls. Yes, we see them being released, but you never seem to hear the media talk about how many are returning to prison after reverting to their criminal ways.
When many of us think of prison we automatically, “oh bad people go to prison, they serve their time so stay for their whole lives, then others move on”. In many cases this is nowhere near the truth. The impact of a person’s prison sentence has effects inmates for years to come. This impact is seen when they can’t find housing, get a job, vote, or support their family. These reasons are the leading factors as to why 60% end up returning to prison.     During the process of reading this compilation of works, Portrait of America, many different point of views were aired. The opinion or attitude on the subject was too tainted. The authors were very biased to their perception of the "story". This book could have been much more beneficial if the facts would have stayed to the straight and narrow. Only the detrimental facts needed to be applied to these chapters. For a history class, as broad as this, this book opened too many doors that could not be explained in as much detail as would be liked. Many of the authors enjoyed mentioning the most scandalous moments of the people's lives then dropped the fact without much support or follow through as to what happened to cause or end these events. Brief summaries only tease the mind, and with the course load of most students, there is hardly extra time to investigate the matter further in detail. For a class such as History 152, biographies and/or documentary style books are more worth the while of the student. For instance make a list of a selection of novels that could be read for the class, so that every student can then explore in depth what that student thinks is interesting. Although the book was teasing in nature the chapters did flow well and were easy to read. The procession of the chapters had wonderful transition as to not loose the student. While proceeding through this book there were several different reoccurring topics that appeared. This paper will discuss these two reoccurring topics: the civil rights movement and former presidents.

When prisoners find a jobs, they are usually work in jobs that one doesn’t not have to have a high-skill set, such as food service, wholesale, and maintenance and repair. The book was written by Jeffrey Ross and Stephen Richards, both of whom are college professors and criminal justice experts. The population of prisons across the United States has increased dramatically in recent decades despite overall crime rates decreasing during the same time period. Approximately seven million American people are in some form of correctional custody. Between the years1980 and 2000, America’s prison population increased by 500 percent. During the same time period, the number of prisons grew by 300 percent (Ross and Richards, xii). Close to 50 percent of people admitted to confinement have previously served time, exemplifying that the criminal justice system “recycles” inmates through the system again and again (Ross and Richards, xi).
