A minor basketball accident on Tuesday brought me face to face with a gang member named Piltus. Pitus was 20 years old and known for his basketball skills. In 2016 he didn’t get any scholarships because of his bad grades and bad criminal record despite him being a natural starter on any college team. However two years left him unathletic and rusty, he was moving like he wasn’t as good as he used to be, and I was in top notch shape. I beat him in a pickup game 7 to 21. A gang member like him, getting trash talked by someone like me without him even being able to say anything because I had beat him so bad left him angry. His friends watched me embarrass him on both sides of the ball. The next day I walked to the court stunned to see a dazzle of Piltus’ friends …show more content…
I started shooting around, and Piltus came up to me and told me he didn't want to see an ashy elbowed bum like me hanging around his court anymore. I left shocked and a bit scared, I knew Piltus was in a gang called the Pirus but I didn’t think he was going to take this to a further level. I told my dad about what happened and he told me to shake it off. 3 days later me and my buddy Mills went to the court. I thought since it had been awhile that Piltus wouldn’t be waiting for me again but there he was again. They threatened if I came again they would make it the last time. Mills and I knew they were most likely bluffing; we had never done anything to them specifically except beat Piltus in a basketball game. I decided to round up all the best players I knew, and since I was on the varsity team in my school, it wasn’t that hard. I got five people but compared to the people I saw Piltus playing with our team was a bit short. Regardless of all of this, I had confidence in our team. However a bit of that confidence shrunk when we got them, Piltus wasn’t playing with the usual people he played with. Instead, he has people who are locally seen as
Due to political aspirations, government bureaucracy, and greed 111 men lost their lives and devastated the lives of loved ones and a community. While, I believe that it was collection of people who is to blame for the explosion one person who could have really avoided this situation was Robert M. Medill and his assistant Robert Weir. Robert Medill, Director of the Illinois of Bureau of Mines and Minerals, was a man filled with greed and power and did nearly nothing to fix the hazardous condition in Centralia. Medill department were very aware of the dangerous conditions at the mine but ignored requests to correct violations. Instead, Medill and Weir’s handling of the inspection reports and other communications were not conducive to clearing
Dating back to 449 B.C., Sparta and Athens always had an alliance, but as time grew that balance slowly began to fall as one felt threatened by another. Before any sight of unsteadiness the Spartans and Athenians had a bound partnership. Beginning after their domination of the Persian war, the two states slowly became aware of one another’s growing power. More time went by, and the Spartans began to grow conscious of the other states, feeling wary and paranoid around them (Fox, 170). No state was particularly to blame for the strain on their peace treaty, nor for the war, it came as the two states developed. Eventually the two states had clashed enough and declared war. Although the Spartans gave the Athenians a chance to back down and temporarily stall war, the two states would never be equal, their allies resented one another far too much. The growing urge for power was bound to take over sooner or later. Finally, after 7 years of uneasy tension, Sparta could wait no longer and declared war against Athens (Fox, 167). Although the Athenians and Spartans lived together in peace for so long, they existed in a fragile balance that was bound to eventually lead to war.
How would you feel if you couldn’t convey your emotion? People with Asperger’s Syndrome the answer. The Curious Incident in the Night-Time (The Curious Incident) is a novel that was authored by Mark Haddon. In this novel, the narrator is a teenage boy, Christopher John Francis Boone, who is exactly 15 years and 3 months old, and he has Asperger’s. He struggles with his social ability and has an odd hatred for the color yellow. Alix Generous is a co-founder of the company AutismSees and grew up battling Asperger’s as well. This conflicts his social skills and renders him emotionless at times. The effects of being emotionally detached as a result of Asperger’s can be devastating, and also uncomfortable. But, some may be envious.
I continued to push myself to do better, but my coach relentlessly would call me out and embarrasses me in front of the team. When my teammates questioned why I was not a part of their varsity team, my coach would call an organized team meeting, one I was not invited to attend. She was cruel and her words were demeaning, insulting and she seemed to be on a mission to have my teammates shun me on and off the court. She told the girls that I was not “physically or mentally ready for varsity”.
"Patroclus," Achilles started, his voice notably low and serious in comparison to the cheerful tone it had been just seconds before. "Do not move."
A year later, I was again chosen for the team. This time, I worked my way from being a back-up catcher to the starting 3rd baseman in two weeks. But after going 0-2 in my first two at-bats, my coach took me out of the starting line-up. Again, I pinch-hit, and was very successful at it. I even hit what turned out to be a game-winning homerun. We later reached the championship game again, but we lost it for the second time. This time I was more frustrated than I could ever remember being. I was slamming my hand into walls and almost crying. I was really acting very childish.
Novels are valuable because they share important insights like how Curiosity could lead to consequences, how people are not as they seem, and how a big part of trust is gone, when lies are used. The novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, by Mark Haddon is a great example. This book shows how curiosity could lead to consequences, how people are not always as they seem to be, and how a big part of trust is gone, when lies are used. The novel is about a boy named Christopher Boone, who has minor disabilities but very intelligent. He goes on a quest to find out who kills one of the dogs in the neighborhood. This saved countless lives on Tarawa and ending the bloody and brutal battle on Tarawa island
Throughout the Ancient Greek world, there have been many wars and standoffs. However, there has been only one which changed the course of Greek history forever; the Peloponnesian War. Caused by the growing tension between Athens and Sparta, it came and left, leaving only destruction in its wake. The defeat of Athens in the Peloponnesian War caused the downfall of Greece, and the end of the Classical Age.
Octavian’s victory over Mark Antony in the battle of Actium is labeled as the most important battle of Antony’s civil war. It directly led to Octavian’s final conquest over Rome and is labeled as the defining moment of the birth of the Roman Empire. Despite fairly evenly matched forces, an overwhelming lack of leadership on Mark Antony’s part and many brilliant tactical moves made by Octavian and his Admirals allowed this battle to be an extremely decisive victory in Octavian’s favor. This paper will analyze the tactical and leadership based decisions made by both sides.
As the veterans of the court the world’s best Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone, John Stockton just to name a few would choose their usual suspects with big broad shoulders, chiseled rock bodies and fully developed athletic abilities in the midst of them there he was a baby face ,long body, lanky kid with his arms hanging off him like a arangatang awaiting to be chosen his abilities to be unseen then with a southern accent hesitation in his voice “your with me kid” as he would run over to join his teammates I couldn’t be helped but be drawn to him.
In this essay, I am going to anaylise the Peloponnesian War. I will look at what appears to have caused the war, how it developed, and what the outcome of it was. As Thucydides is virtually the only surviving primary source of this event, I will also discuss the man and his method.
This past fall I tried out for the varsity basketball team at my high school. I had played both on the freshman team and then last year on the junior varsity team. Playing on the varsity team is all I’ve wanted to do. I’d practiced all summer and in September and October to get ready for the try-outs at the beginning of November. Unfortunately I did not make the team. It was a huge blow for me because I had worked really hard and had expected to make it. Thankfully my moms and my friends were there to remind me that there were other paths to pursue my dreams. I could have easily been bitter and decided to stop caring, but they wouldn’t let me. I was humbled by this experience and decided to turn it into a positive. I’ve since decided to join the Wilson Live club at school. It’s a group that films and commentates sports events at school. This connects to a possible major that I’m interested in when I go to college--communications or sports
As a young kid growing up in Detroit the one thing a kid wants is approval from people they look up to. When I was nine years old I played for an AAU team, I had a blount coach who wasn’t afraid to tell u about yourself and not in a nice way either. You would think he would take it down a few notches on some eight, nine and ten year olds, but he didn’t think he was doing anything but showing us some tough love. That’s not how I saw it though, because he took it too far one day when he asked me and my teammates to raise our hands if we wanted to make it to the NBA. As we started to raise our hands he started to name people he thought wouldn’t make it and I was one of them. I didn’t let that hold me back though , so everyday from that moment
It was the start of summer 2002, and the Mid America Youth Basketball (MAYB) national tournament was taking place in Andover, Kansas. Along with the rest of the team, I was excited to play some basketball for the first time since the middle school basketball season was over. Our team, Carlon Oil, had been together and played every summer for the last four years. We were a really good team, with an overall record of 65-4 over those four years and were hoping to continue our legacy. Lonnie Lollar, our coach for the summer, was also the coach of our high school basketball team. I had a history of groin injuries, and every summer it seemed that I would have to sit out at least a game on the bench icing my groin. But this summer was different, and I along with everyone in the gym wouldn't have expected my summer to end with a injury such as a broken leg.
