By every individual accepting and acknowledging that we are all different then there will be mutual respect for each other’s cultural difference. When these differences are explored in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment, they are more than simply tolerating others but that through these differences are instead commended and embraced. People become aware of each other’s difference and uniqueness such as religion, sexual orientation, race, gender, age and beliefs. When this is embraced by the health care providers then there will be improved care.
Throughout the Think Culturally assignment, I realized the impact I will have as a healthcare provider. The scenarios that were provided throughout each course assignment gave me insight on the negative health outcomes that can occur when cultural competence is not present. In order to have cultural competence, I must acknowledge that some patient’s health beliefs will be different from my own. This can be distinguished by having open communication and asking pertinent questions. Treating patients that are not proficient in English, can become overwhelming. As a future nurse practitioner, I want to utilize all the necessary recourses to ensure my patient’s fully understand the plan of care and treatment regimen.
For those of us who work in an acute care setting nursing is more about vital signs, electrolyte imbalances, arrhythmias, respiratory status and mental status changes just to mention a few of the things that demand our attention on a day to day basis. However, at times we are faced with issues that call into play ethical decision and hence it is important to understand ethical concepts that can influence such decisions. Concepts such as scientism, relativism, post modernism have been recognized as playing a key role in the conflict between science and religion. A conflict that has hindered an important healthcare goal of holistic patient care (Grand Canyon University, 2015).
Therefore, it is virtually impossible to deliver effective and comprehensive healthcare without clear communication between the patient and practitioners. It is a necessity to understand that there are countless cultures across the globe, and no matter how underrepresented, morally, all are entitled to the right to practice their own beliefs unimpeded as long as they do not threaten or inhibit other’s rights to practice.

With patient-centered care as health care providers, we have to have ways to work around a patient with different beliefs. Catering to their culture differences and needs is a must in order to fulfill their needs.
Acknowledging the beliefs, language and norms of the patients is an essential aspect to consider when assessing patients. For instance, when a foreign client visits a pharmacy store, they should be provided a translator. A translator facilitates the process, helping both the provider and client come across more clearly. When a client is provided with a translator, they frequently leave satisfy, since they are able to understand what it’s being giving to them; and that satisfaction becomes a two-way street because, if a client is satisfied, the provider is satisfied as well. Also acknowledging a patients’ religion practices is beneficial. For example, a Muslim woman must likely would like to be seeing by a female physician.
