After having a better understanding of the essay written by Kakalios and its flaws, there are some issues with the thesis and structure. To begin with, the thesis is not made clear. It at first appears as if the thesis is on page 71, when the question of "What's the holdup?" (Kakalios 71) is asked, but as the writing progresses this no longer seems to be the case. The thesis is not stated from the very start of the essay. Instead, much time is spent discussing Pym, and for several pages one is left to wonder what the purpose is. Perhaps if much of the information talked about for the first few pages was eliminated, the essay would be more concise and organized.
This brings us to the structure: is it organized? It would be if all the paragraphs
She reiterates her point multiple times, comparing the structure to that of the scientific method in its “hypothesize, test, conclude” approach and breaks the five-paragraph essay down into the simple idea of an introduction, argument, and conclusion. The fact that there are three body paragraphs is not something that should be strictly enforced, more of a guideline to produce a stellar piece. Smith uses credible examples of her own teachers and professors and emphasizes her own credibility when she states that she majored in English at UC Berkeley. To make her point even stronger, she concludes by pointing out that the essay she just wrote is, in fact, five paragraphs, and proves to be extremely
However, though John Warner’s argument is strong, Kerri smith’s argument is stronger. In Kerri Smith’s article “In Defense of the Five-Paragraph Essay,” She claims that the five-paragraph essay should stay taught in schools as a guideline for a well-structured essay. She explains the five-paragraph essay as an “introduce-develop-conclude structure” that even great expository writing follows this structure (Smith 16). She purposefully communicates to her audience this idea to show that this structure gives students the knowledge and capability to write a professional essay. The five-paragraph essay includes the three key points to have a well-structured and organized essay. By mentioning that other great writers use this form of structure, she creates a stronger argument as to why the five-paragraph essay is important to education. She continues her article by explaining her early stages of writing and how she was taught; over time, her teachers would show her new ways to improve her writing which, in the end, she was told to think “of those five paragraphs simply as a mode of organization” (Smith

One weakness is that much of the information included is not in chronological order. This makes it difficult for the reader to understand in which order these events had occurred. Flipping back and forth between pages is sometimes needed, as well as making a timeline of your own. While Kusmer did have a rhyme or reason as to why he had written the book how he did, a way to solve this issue would have been to simply write the book in chronological order. Another weakness is that sometimes the book is quite dry. It is an interesting read, however at times it is more like reading a history book:
The paragraphs are organized in a chronological way. He begins by explaining the dusty living conditions, the small living area, and the space he is sharing with 9 others. He then goes into the hygienic part and explains how difficult it is to be awaken at 0400 with the urge to use the restroom and having to walk a thousand miles over loose gravel that seems to be cold as ice to do so. The way the passage is written allows the reader to walk through the experience with the author. He makes the reader feel like his shadow, following him through his
Writing is hardly ever done with just one sentence. It is a combination of sentences that all have to coincide with one another to reach a goal of clarity. "A series of clear sentences can still be confusing if we fail to design them to fit their context, to reflect a constant point of view, to emphasize our most important ideas. These sentences could all refer to the same set of conditions, but each leads us to understand the conditions from a different point of view," (Williams, 45). It is always a good idea to start out small; take a sentence and make is clear. This then needs to be applied to groups of sentences together to make the whole sample of writing clear.
itself, but it also intertwines into every page one or more allusions to previously written
Organization is pertinent when writing a report, manuscript, review, or any other form of written paper. Things to focus on with the organization are the length, headings, and seriation. The length should be based upon the main points. The points should be stated clearly and concisely. They should not be wordy, therefore, the written manuscript should not be too long. The headings in an APA manuscript have a five level format. The main level is to be centered, capitalized and have bold print. Subheading level 2 should be all the way left, bold, capitalized and lower case heading. Level 3 should be indented, bold, and have a lowercase parag...
Each section is arranged chronologically. I have included the title of the work, any alternate US titles, its date of first
Paragraphs- a group of sentences that forms a unit which is usually 5 sentences or half a page long. The group of sentences within the paragraph should support one main idea (Anonymous, The Writing Center, Paragraphs, 2014).
In the chapter about paragraphs it gives many examples of how each paragraph has its own main idea and how a paragraph is the most important unit of thought. The main idea of a paragraph is usually stated or found in the first sentence. According to this chapter many writers find it helpful to think a paragraph as a small version of an essay. A topic sentence needs to be backed up with explanations, concrete details, statistics, or vivid examples. A good example that had those characteristics was the paragraph from Martin Luther King Jr’s essay “The Ways of Meeting Oppression”. This paragraph was unified and well developed and the ideas were arranged logically, making it an excellent paragraph. A paragraph should be as also long to develop
...ective to an extent but could have been organized differently and been more effective by combining some paragraphs and including titles so the reader knows what they are going to read about. The structure and organization does reflect the audience it was written for by being informative to everyone, members and non-members, who would visit this site.
The text layout in regards to style deals with font, size and contrast. The font makes the text. You are able to change the font to show importance or the use quotes. An example would be "bolding" an example. A normal font such as Times Roman can be used to for the body. However, a font such as Arial Black allows the text to stand out. Changes in size also have the same effect. These adjustments in the format of the text also creates a contrast in the writing. This allows the reader to easily identify the important points. I feel Strunk and White choose a design that is easy to read and sticks directly to the point. The reader is able to locate the issue and find the solution and an example to problem. The style issue is listed by number and bolded to stand out. An example of the same correct style issue is given in different versions. This allows the reader to apply such style to their own writings. These different topics are stated in bold to be easily read. The guide gives the reader good examples to assist in their writings. This is important because the reader is searching for something particular and seeking a particular resolution. Providing an easy to read guide is extremely helpful. A guide that is easy to navigate decreases the stress often associated with writing. The ability to find things easy is always helpful.
There are many different ways theses two authors could have used to layout their articles, but they chose completely
This format is also almost like block style of letter. The only difference is that the first line of each paragraph begins with the left margin and all the remaining lines in each paragraph are indented four to five spaces. Its look is unusual and it catches the attention of the reader quickly. This may be a disadvantage of this format because it leads the reader to focus only on the form rather than the message of the letter. This style consumes more time in typing due to many indentation and use of mixed punctuation. Therefore, this format has never been popular among the writers of letter writing. For example:
