Job hunting can be one of the most difficult things a person has to do, especially if he or she is looking for their dream job. Richard N. Bolles recognizes this problem and wrote What Color Is Your Parachute with the goal of giving job-hunters a practical guide for finding their dream job. For those who are unsure of their future career the book is filled with multiple exercises that will help identify what job is personally right for them. The author not only helps identify what job the reader will thrive in, but helps them set up a resume and gives tips to ace an interview to secure the job. This method is used to open yourself to new job markets, figure out in detail what you are looking for, and encourage you to seek after your goals. Understanding who you are is put into practice in the book by using the seven-petal flower. Bolles uses the image of seven petals that make up one flower just as each person has seven sides that make up an individual. When a job-hunter seeks a job that only meets the requirements of a few of the petals the employee is often unhappy with their job. Having my flower developed in front of me helps me to identify my future dream job. I currently work at Fidelity investments, but the job only meets a few of the requirements from my flower and leaves me feeling unsatisfied. An example of one of the requirements my job does meet is my favorite knowledge or fields of interests. I love working in finance I enjoy learning about different investment opportunities and how people are preparing for retirement. This is also something I enjoy outside of work, I love to hear about people preparing for retirement and have enjoyed all college courses I have taken on finance. However, one petal my job is missing is having a goal, purpose, or mission in life. My major goal in my petal was the kingdom of the mind, this is when you want to spread your knowledge to others. I think financial planning is important and many people don’t use their money wisely. My goal is to spread my knowledge of financial planning to others so that they can live a less stressful life and reach their financial goals. This is something my job currently doesn’t allow me to do as I don’t communicate with clients. Another petal my job lacks is what I can do and love to do.
