Many people declare that pizza is the best food that they have ever tasted, or it is at least their favorite, but pizza has not gone far beyond fulfilling a sense of hunger. “The Best Pizza in the World”, by Elizabeth Gilbert, is a short story that explores how a simple pizza quenches the narrator's thirst for adventure and changes her overall attitude toward herself. In “The Best Pizza in the World”, Gilbert uses description, cause and effect; and pathos to share her experience of how a little pizzeria in Naples lead her to temporary enlightenment.
One of the most important strategies used in this work is cause and effect. Gilbert begins her story by explaining that her urge to travel was brought forth when she gave an young girl who was

backpacking through Europe directions to the train station. “Traveling-to-a-place energy and living-in-a-place energy are two fundamentally different energies, and something about meeting this Australian girl on her way to Slovenia just gave me the jones to hit the road” (Gilbert 175), she tells her audience. It was this moment, a moment that happened strictly by chance, that set the story into motion. Without this encounter, it is fair to assume the narrator would have remained in Rom . Gilbert used cause and effect to give a more meaningful purpose to the backing of the woman's trip. Instead of being self deprecating and indulging in her sorrows, the narrator takes advantage of her current situation and plans a trip to Naples. “And that’s why I called my friend Sofie and said, ‘Let’s go down to Naples for the day and eat some pizza!’ Immediately, just a few hours later, we are on the train and then -- like magic -- we are there, (Gilbert 175) Within the same day, the narrator finds herself in the hectic town of Naples, all because she was mistaken for a local. Without the concept of cause and effect, there would be no story. The initial reasoning behind traveling to this pizzeria was due to a friend. The narrator quotes, “"Please go to this pizzeria. Order the margherita pizza with double mozzarella. If you do not eat this pizza when you are in Naples, please lie to me later and tell me that you did." (Gilbert). Gilbert uses this to influence to choices made within the story. This life changing experience may have been due to chance, but Gilbert made sure it happened. It was Giovanni’s recommendation that lead the narrator to the pizzeria with the acclaimed best pies. Without his influence, her yearn to travel may have taken her somewhere completely different and she would have therefore missed out on this life altering occasion. Another implied cause and effect moment. “ I am gaining weight every day, of course...taking in such ghastly amounts of cheese and pasta and bread and wine and chocolate and pizza dough” (Gilbert) The repetitive use of pathos is employed to appeal to the reader. The use of pathos allows the audience to not only imagine the scene but to call upon personal previous experiences so that they can relate with the feelings of the narrator. “When I heard her plans, I was stricken with such a dumb spasm of jealousy, thinking, I want to go to Slovenia! How come I never get to travel anywhere?” (Gilbert) the narrator cries. Gilbert chose emotions, that for the most part, everyone could identify with. Both children and adults find themselves guilty of wanting something simply because it belongs to someone else Gilbert bonds her audience with her main character through her use of pathos. She chose more common, yet still powerful, emotions. One of the main strategies that Gilbert used is description.
Gilbert wanted the audience to have an idea of her experience in Italy. Describing how she felt when she was in the streets of Naples and as she observed her surroundings, she wanted to get her audience comfortable to the sense of her trip, feeling how different the atmosphere is in Naples, “I instantly love Naples. Wild, raucous, noisy, dirty, balls-out Naples. An anthill inside a rabbit warren, with all the exoticism of a Middle Eastern bazaar and a touch of New Orleans voodoo. A tripped, out, dangerous and cheerful nuthouse (Gilbert 175), she says. Gilbert uses this to set the scene of Naples, Italy. Unless her intended audience was natives to the town, or well traveled civilians, embracing the feel of the city could not be done without the details provided. Though the pizza itself made the most impact on her, it is the entire trip that leaves such a large impression on the narrator. The essence of the pizzeria plays an important role in her life changing journey. “The guys who make this miracle happen are shoveling the pizzas in and out of the wood-burning oven, looking for all the world like the boilerman in the belly of a great ship who shovel coal into the raging furnaces” (Gilbert). It is not just about how delicious the pizza taste, it is the entire environment of the pizzeria that leaves the both the women in awe. Seeing these men working and sweating over the
ovens Gilbert’s use of description did not end at the city though, she thoroughly describes the look and taste of the pizza, leaving her audience craving a slice. “The dough, it takes me half my meal to figure out, tastes more like Indian than like any pizza dough I ever tried. It's soft and chewy and yielding, but incredibly thin. I always thought we only had two choices in our lives when it came to pizza crust-thin and crispy, or thick and doughy. How was I to have known there could be a crust in this world that was thin and doughy? Holy of holies! Thin, doughy, strong, gummy, yummy, chewy, salty pizza paradise. On top, there is a sweet tomato sauce that foams up all bubbly and creamy when it melts the fresh buffalo mozzarella, and the one sprig of basil in the middle of the whole deal somehow infuses the entire pizza” (Gilbert) Her use of detail leaves a clear mental picture, It is safe to say that anyone who has seen a pizza could imagine that delectable doughy goodness. The way Gilbert presents the look of the pie, explaining every inch, from the crust to the sauce is the reason her writing is effective. She tells the readers, “I have come to believe in my delirium that my pizza might actually love me, in return. I am having a relationship with this pizza, almost an affair. Meanwhile, Sofie is practically in tears over hers, she's having a metaphysical crisis about it...” (Gilbert). Gilbert could have said that Sofie loved the pie, but instead she chose the words “metaphysical crisis” to depict her reaction. She is implying that is was not just tasteful but that it is so good that her senses could not keep up with how amazing the pizza is, and that her body does not actually believe it is possible, yet it is. Their reactions mirror the purpose of the essay. Instead of incorporating a vague overview of the experience and expecting the reader to understand, she dives into the material reassuring that the reader is provided all of the information so that they comprehend this life changing moment. Gilberts use of description allows the audience to vividly envision every step of the expedition, which in return opens the possibility of walking in the narrator's shoes.
In the book Playing for Pizza the story first took place in Cleveland where Rick Dockery was the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns and then took place in Parma, Italy where he got hired to play quarterback after he got fired from the NFL because he blew a 17 point lead with 11 minutes to go against the Broncos in the AFC championship game. In Playing for Pizza the other uses various settings for the novel to be more realistic because they both are completely real places.

He was a photographer who brought attention to the living conditions of immigrants in america. Immigrants were living upwards of 12 people in a room. Rooms without ventilation, or indoor plumbing, the unsanitary conditions made for an unhealthy cycle of disease. Cholera, and tuberculosis were very common in this time, because they lacked the knowledge we know today. The italians had never encountered such problems as this. In Italy, while they lived in close quarters, they also spent a large portion of their time outside. Not only were there homes unsafe, but also their work places.

Bruni explains that Florence is a beautiful city, one which cannot even be described in words. He notes that Florence is not ostentatious, but rather, it is elegant in its moderation (23b). The city is physically beautiful, but it also “possesses the clearest and purist speech” (42a). “The study of literature in Florence grows in full vigor,” Bruni points out. Pitti indirectly shows that he agrees with the art of literature by writing a sonnet in his diary (Pitti 71). Everything from the buildings to the land it sits on, Florence is claimed by Bruni to be the most gorgeous city in the world. The city is also amazingly clean (24a). Everywhere you go, Bruni is positive that you will find nothing “disgusting to the eye” (24a). However, according to Pitti, his family had to leave the city because “they had taken refuge from the plague then raging in Florence” (Pitti 64). Pitti again mentions how he and his family had to leave because of the plague in 1411 (Pitti 87). Dati also states that “there was a plague” in the year 14...
Unless you are a wealthy Italian, you live a much humbler lifestyle. A lot of Italians homes are meager, and the material goods Americans want and vie for, aren’t as important to them. I realized how fortunate I was for all the belongings I took for granted. Some Italians would view the home I grew up in as a mansion compared to their own. They seemed so much happier and it was humbling to see them content by having a lot

Florence, Italy was a city just like any other during the Renaissance. It was city of 50,000 people, less than there were in Paris and Venice but more than most other European cities. The busiest parts of the city were the Ponte Vecchio, a place lined with markets and houses, the neighborhood of the Orsanmichele and Mercato Vecchio, or the Old Market. Florence was a place of beauty and leisure. A Venetian visitor once said, “There is in my opinion no region more sweeter than that wherein Florence is a placed for Florence is situated in a plain surrounded on all sides by hills and mountains…And the hills are fertile cultivated, pleasant…” (Unger, pg. 1). Florence was a very prosperous city; it made fortunes off of wool and banking trades. A certain Florentine family contributed to the vast wealth as well. The Medici family was no doubt the foundation of prosperity for Florence.
For most everyone maturation is a process we must all undergo. For a girl at the young age of eleven, it seemed so far ahead in the future, but soon enough her mud throwing days were over. This was the life of Lyra Belacqua. Even though she didn’t get to have quality time with her family, having mud wars and making friendships with kitchen boys was the origin of Lyra’s childhood, that created the mischievous girl raised in Jordan Collage. The novel The Golden Compass, by Philip Pullman, tells of a young orphan girl that gets sent away with a female scholar named Mrs. Coulter to be taken care of instead of staying in a college filled with men. After she has been with Mrs. Coulter for some time Lyra realizes that her new caretaker has been
If the figure of the detective is to restore the state of peace and grace in society, this role is hindered and eventually dissolves against the backdrop of the paradox which defines the city throughout the novel. For example, in the novel, the Iguana?s constant switching of identity and the corresponding murders that occur in areas outside Bologna only make it more challenging for Grazia to connect an individual who appears at the scene of each crime. In a sense then, the deceptive illusion which the Iguana represents exposes the contradictions by which the city seems bound. For instance, to a foreigner of Bologna, the city can be characterised by its ?well defined perimeters? However, the constant reminders that are employed by the narrative (?This city is not what it seems?) only exculpate a notion of its truth that the city boundaries conceal a deeper layer of truth that could result in potentially destructive consequences: You think this city is small because you?re looking at what lies within the city walls. These consequenc...
The novel Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte consists of continuous journey through Jane’s life towards her final happiness and freedom. Jane’s physical journeys contribute significantly to plot development and to the idea that the novel is a journey through Jane’s life. Each journey causes her to experience new emotions and an eventual change of some kind. These actual journeys help Jane on her four figurative journeys, as each one allows her to reflect and grow.
Oh my. Where do I start? When my margarita pizza came, it was on a large plate. I was interested in how I could finish this all by myself for I get full very quickly. I sprinkled a ton of crushed red pepper on my margarita pizza because I love my food spicy. My friends in ainticaptiation for my first bite of Punch Pizza watched as I took my first bite. I fell into a heavenly bliss. So freaking delicious. Amazing. Exquisite. Savory. Scrumptious and divine. I'm not even over exaggerating because I'm writing this in a letter. I truly believe all that. Putting in a note that I didn't have breakfast and was extremely famished when I arrived at the restaurant. Even afterwards I couldn't had another pizza for the explosion of a great pizza in my mouth. I don't know what special trick you do to your pizza but it's really
