Both stories take place in the seventeenth and early eighteenth century. “Packed Densely, Like Herrings” is a story depicting the hardships colonist endured while on their voyage to the new world to become indentured servants. The second story, “ Is it not enough that we are torn from our country and friends?” is a story explaining all the struggles that slaves from Africa endured while they are taken from their country and put on to unsanitary ships to a long voyage to the new world. That all changed when the system of indentured servitude was introduced. The indentured servitude system was a system that allowed colonist to travel to the new world and work for a period of time before they could receive their freedom. Many would travel as families, but on the ship children between the ages of 1-7 usually did not make the long voyage. But not only did children die, so did adults. The people of the ship were exposed to many disease and they lived in unsanitary places. They did not get good food; it was all rotten or moldy and the water was undrinkable, there were worms and mud in it. When learning about indentured servants I did not think that their travel to the new world was as harsh as it was depicted in the story. Yes, I knew it was hard because I mean months on end on a ship with crammed spaces could not be fun, but never did it occur to me that they had to deal with diseases and barely having anything to eat. “ Is it Not Enough that We Are Torn From Our Country and Friends?”, is a story that reveals the struggles that a slave had to go through while they were forced onto ships to a place where everything that they had was stripped from them in a blink of an eye. Of course there were many similarities between the voyage of a an indentured servant and a slave, but a slave was taken from its home and sent to a place that they did not want to go and where they were going to have no freedom and would not be able to have a say in what they wanted. “ I now saw myself deprived of all chance of returning to my native country” is a line that really made an impact on my reading because you can read the distresses Olaudah Equiano is trying to depict.
