Marina Carr’s By the Bog of Cats explores meaningless marriage, in a time and place where this alliance is only made for the selfish reasons of the patriarchal order. This play is set in a Bog in Ireland during the Celtic Tiger. Carthage decides to leave his daughter Josie and her Mother Hester, to marry Caroline Roy for greedy reasons. Xavier, Caroline’s father is very supportive of this marriage since it would greatly benefit the business deal he has with Carthage regarding land. Carr uses symbolism to illustrate how meaningless the ceremony is and demonstrates the reinforced patriarchal order by identifying Xavier and Carthage’s true intentions. To Xavier, his daughter Caroline is a bartering tool, which undermines the rights and power of women at this time. All Caroline wanted was for her and Carthage to have “the best day of our lives” (374), but it was the opposite of that “Everyone laughin’ behind me back and pityin’ me” (393). Caroline feels horrible because she knows this is a “sham weddin’” (366). She knows that Carthage’s only intention is to get land from her father. Xavier, on the other hand, has his own intentions that Hester can predict “He’ll spancel ya back to the scrubber ya are.” (366). As Xavier is “signin’ his farm over” (366) to Carthage after the wedding, Xavier has his own intentions, to have control of Carthage. This shows how the patriarchal order is reinforced. Xavier, a rich and powerful man, is using his own daughter to sign his land over to a man that he can then take advantage of. Even though Caroline knows that marrying Carthage is not out of love, comparing it to “Walkin’ on somewan’s grave” (374), she goes through with it since she has no control over this situation. Xavier wants this marriage to happen for his selfish reasons, therefore Caroline has no say since she’s living under a patriarchal rule.
