In the article Failure and Rescue by Atul Gawande he exemplifies that Mrs C. a 87 year old women takes a big risk getting surgery at her age, that if people didn’t take risks we wouldn’t be where we are today, and that if people had the confidence to admit they made a mistake there would be a less likelihood of failure. Atul Gawande’s first discusses how a eighty seven year old women proves it is rewarding to take risks. Gawande describes how Mrs C a eighty seven year old women’s stomach twisted on itself due to a surgical mistake. While talking about surgery and the possibility of failure and success surgically. He says “not that long ago, surgery was so inherently dangerous that you would only consider it as a last resort.”(2) If people didn’t take risks when taking risks was needed people would still be deathly afraid of surgery and only use it in life or death situations, and if surgeons didn’t take risks people would be mentally unaware of the miracles of surgery today. Atul Gasade’s last point is that if people had the courage to admit there wrong and catch there own mistakes it would be less likely to fail the next time. While explaining that if people had recognized that they had made a mistake during the BP Oil disaster eleven people would still be alive. He states “But recognizing that your expectations are proving wrong—accepting that you need a new plan—is commonly the hardest thing to do.”(3) if the people involved in the BP Oil disaster caught there mistake-- like the surgeon who had made the mistake of twisting Mrs. Cs’s stomach-- eleven people would still be alive
