Telling just a simple lie will drag you through a never-ending road of twisty turns and harsh realities. In Charmaine Wilkerson’s Black Cake, the Bennett family falls apart. After the death of Bert Bennett, later followed by Covey Bennett, their two children, Benny and Byron, are left mad at each other and the world due to false realities, and deep rooting lies. Even if one is fearful of their past, it is still never acceptable to lie to a loved one, because it will ultimately cause unnecessary feelings of confusion and resentment that end up harming a relationship. To begin, it is essential to remain honest with loved ones, because failing to do so will cause extreme confusion and give them a false sense of your identity. He shakes it free of charge. Benny stands there, her mouth open, but says nothing. And what right does she have to say? Byron hasn’t seen Benny in eight years. And now, their ma is gone for good” (9). Byron is furious enough to “push” her away, and “shake” his arm away from her. This is Byron's way of showcasing his fury because he feels that he wants nothing to do with his sister. If Benny’s conversations with their mother hadn’t been kept a secret from Byron, then he would have understood that she did care about their mother. Due to the lies, however, Byron doesn’t know any of this and reacts with anger. At the end of the day, all of these lies caused unnecessary anger and added up to destroy Byron and Benny’s relationship with each other. In conclusion, lying to a loved one will truly harm strong relationships, creating both confusion and arguments. In the book Black Cake, this concept destroys the Bennett family with lies going on both ends. People became furious and confused when all they truly were supposed to be was supportive of each other.
