Throughout the history of the United States, the idea that everyone should be free to follow his or her dreams without any obstacle has remained a common theme. America became the Land of Opportunity because it allowed every citizen and every immigrant the chance to chase their dreams and gave them the freedom to make those dreams come true. Freedom is one of the most important American ideals and in almost every period in the history of the United States people argue that someone is lacking the freedom and the opportunities they deserve. Franklin frequently traveled back and forth to Europe as a diplomat who also worked to keep Europeans updated on the status of newly independent America; land availability, job opportunities, and opportunities to pursue higher education. In 1784, when Benjamin Franklin wrote “Information to Those Who Would Remove to America”, The United States wasn’t exactly the country it is today. First of all, the Constitution hadn’t been written yet; the country was under the rules of the Articles of Confederation, which kept the individual states mostly sovereign under a weak federal government. Second of all, there was a lot of available land to farm, which gave people a chance to become wealthy and rise up in society. Franklin wrote “Information to Those Who Would Remove to America” as a way to tell Europeans who may have been struggling, that they didn’t have to stay in Europe, that there were plenty of opportunities for them in America.
