Part 1:Summary The title of my book is “A Long Way Gone”. The author of the book is Ishmael Beah and this book was published on February 13, 2007. This book is about a civil war in Sierra Leone and the army arming little kids to fight for them in the civil war. It was a war between two groups, the rebels and the Sierra Leone army. The rebels would take over villages and force younger boys to join their army to help overthrow the government. They would arm the kids with guns and rocket launchers. They would go from village to village raiding and looting the towns. The meaning/purpose of the author writing and publishing this book was to bring attention and show what was happening in this war. They were trying to show how the rebels would arm kids and brand them with a mark to show they were a part of the rebels, so they couldn’t leave. Over half a million people relocated to different places all over the country. This war on both sides was funded by blood diamonds and slave labor. A truce between both sides was made in 1999 but later destroyed in 2000. This war was a long war and lasted around 11 years. The book seems pretty accurate to what really happened in the Sierra Leone Civil War, and I can see the similarity between the book and what actually happened. A Long Way Gone is really accurate to the actual Sierra Leone Civil War. It shows the fact that they were using kids to fight in this war, how they destroyed and raided the villages they would pass through, and how they would use drugs a lot. It would show how they would force these kids into fighting for them and if they didn’t they would be killed. It helped it be more realistic because the author actually lived in Sierra Leone during this war and fought for the Sierra Leone army as a child against the
