Carson Bailey Mr. Nagey English 11B (Honors) 2 June 2024 Inside the World of Cartel Wives Living in the land of drug cartels is a dangerous, sad and traumatizing way of living. Anyone affiliated with a drug cartel will almost always be met with harsh consequences. The novel “Cartel Wives” by Mia Flores and Olivia Flores tells us about that. The authors of cartel wives describe the reality of working with drug lords and becoming targeted by other cartels for having connections with just two people. The main characters Mia and Olivia are married to highly ranked members of the Sinaloa drug cartel. In this true crime novel the main characters tell us about their struggles, the dangers they were constantly facing and the psychological toll on their lives and the impacts of the dangerous life of crime they had gotten themselves into while trying to escape what they had entered into. The main characters Mia and Olivia Flores had roles that were far beyond just being wives to drug lords. They described how they were important to the cartel’s operations. Mia states, “We were not just wives; we were also part of the business” This quote shows that they played an important role in the cartel’s activities. During a scary moment in the book, Olivia says, “We lived each day not knowing if it would be our last. The sound of gunfire was our lullaby”. This quote is from a time when rival cartels were fighting a lot, showing how their lives were always in danger. Saying that gunfire was their lullaby shows how normal violence has become for them. This constant fear and danger proves how risky and tough their lives are.
