Criminal Justice Internship Paper – Sanford Police Department For my first article that I had to review that deal with interns and/or service learning was the Evaluation of a Criminal Justice Internship Program: Why Do Students Take It and Does It Improve Career Preparedness? I choose this particular article because I wanted to see if I had any of the same reason for choosing an internship that this case study did. The purpose of the article was to see if there was a positive or negative impact to whether an internship program will better prepare you for your career of choice. In the study, I shared a majority of the same reason and concerns that was associated with the interns that were taking this survey. There were responses like “I …show more content…

The article talks about four types of experiential learning opportunities (ELOs) for undergraduates to participate in. The four types of experiential learning include internships, field trips, service-learning, and research projects. Internships expands a student understanding of the criminal justice system, often causing a change in students’ attitudes whereby they become less compassionate toward offenders and more understanding of practitioners (George, Lim, Lucas, & Meadows, 2015). But internships can also pose a threat for the student involved on one, for number of reason. If a student is paying for themselves through college, an internship that requires them to be there for a certain amount of hours may impact their work schedule and their income. On top of that they have to manage doing well in all of their other classes and assignments. Service- learning can be defined as s “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities” (George, Lim, Lucas, & Meadows, 2015). Students would have to do preparation for what service learning
The criminal justice field is made up of many facets. The court system includes many professions which include lawyers, judges, police officers and polygraph examiners. The federal justice system has numerous professions as well. Two highly recognizable organizations in the government criminal justice system are the CIA and the FBI. Two careers of interest worth future investigation are a polygraph examiner and a special agent in the FBI.

Gaining an in-depth knowledge of the criminal justice system, throughout my Bachelors program has been exciting as much as an eye opener. Some of the subjects were ones that I did not expect. There were also, ones that had no idea how ignorant I was on the subject.
Within the Criminal Justice System there is diverse career opportunities to choose from. The career I am interested in being is a Criminal Profiler with the FBI National Center for Analysis of Violent Crime. I am interested in this job because it seems to be an intense job to do. A criminal profiler's job is to create a psychological profile of a criminal suspect. Creating one of these profiles can be used to help catch the suspect. This is done by examining evidence from the crime, interviewing witnesses and victims, and analyzing crime scenes. Information obtained from these investigations can then be used to help the profiler determine a pattern of criminal behavior. Most of the time the information that was collected can be used to find out more about the suspect.
...g side by side with the community and to do so successfully, you must have an open mind and not allow your own beliefs to interfere with the main objective of the policing. In college you learn many things about life and living in a small nit “community” with many different people who you come to accept by the end of your college experience. One of the weaknesses that the article holds is the fact that most of the research done is outdated and now irrelevant to today’s world. The amount of people who graduated high school doubled from 1960 to 2004 and the amount of people who graduated college more than tripled in that same time period (Walker & Katz, 2011, p. 126). In conclusion, I think that having a higher education in policing will benefit drastically when it comes to preventing and dealing with crime in such diverse communities all across the United States.

The quest for knowledge and understanding drives individuals to explore the unknown and live out the thoughts that once consumed their minds. Experience and formed opinions are the end results of these journeys; assumptions are either reinforced or shattered, but either way the truth is a little bit closer than before. Dark and gray areas consume the field of criminal justice; only personal experience can serve as a light. Participating in the internship program offered through the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University has become that light. Throughout this semester the knowledge acquired from SHSU criminal justice classes combined with the experiences gained from the Dallas County Adult Probation Department has produced an exceptional understanding of fact and theory pertaining to the field of criminal justice. Courses such as Criminology 262 and the Fundamentals of Criminal Law 264 contributed to the personal triumph gained from involvement in the internship program and allowed individual strengths and weaknesses to ...
Form Intro to Criminal Justice class, the courtroom visits were incredible but, interviewing a criminal justice leader was my favorite task. After visiting police stations, courts, and police department for my interview paper, everyone was denying me saying get a permission letter and stuff. However, I found an officer at my workplace, who is our regular customer. It was very curious to gather information about a criminal justice leader. This interview helped me make a new friend; the officer was very friendly to me, as well as my co-workers. The officer’s name was Mike Hansen. It is surprising to know that police officers take time for public like, Officer Hansen gave me gave 15 minutes. I asked him a couple of questions which didn’t hassle him. He has been involved in this department since 2010; he has been
I have always taken an interest in Criminal Justice and crime prevention ever since middle school and I set out to make my career goal to become a Criminal Justice professional. Thus, pursuing a Criminal Justice master’s degree has been a part of my plans for the future and will become one of my core focuses that I will set up in my graduate studies. It will also enable me to become a more competent working professional and encourage me to advance towards the doctoral program.

...established the first internship in the field, establishing the fact that there was a need for this sub-specialty. By the early 1970's, although many law enforcement agencies were using psychological assessment before hiring trainees, it was still not a wide phenomenon.
For my field experience, I chose to attend a court case. On October 14th, 2015 I went to the District of Columbia court and watched a sentencing. It was not at all what I initially expected although after sitting in class for several weeks I was not shocked by it. What surprised me most was the informal, personal nature that the whole process had. The experience was interesting and I feel that I learned a lot from it.
If I were to be grading myself on this internship program I would give myself a B. I believe that I would deserve an A but this paper itself is not the certain length required. Through the program I learned a lot of valuable information about police departments themselves and how they work because I was actually there. No teacher could have taught this to any students, its something that they would have to experience themselves and something that I highly recommend to any student who is serious about taking criminal justice. The internship program was one of my best experiences with college. I learned a lot of information dealing with the Police and how they work. I also learned that I want a career in this field. I want a job that is different everyday and I don?t know what?s going to happen day after day.
