Trying to become employed or maintain employment is extremely hard to do while receiving welfare assistant due to lack of resources. Some people simply stay on welfare because it’s how they can afford their bills. People that receive assistants do not receive much to start with, so in order to obtain employment the job would need to pay a decent salary to cover the needs of that individual, which jobs are only part time now a days which is far from enough to survive off. Like the text book stated “one full time job is not enough for a two person house hold”. Child care is also a huge problem for parents while trying to attend school and working. Most welfare recipient are single parent(DiNitto & Johnson, 2016) with lack of working skills,
These people are looking for help to pay for their living expenses such as their property costs, mortgages, and utilities. Welfare was meant to be a short term solution that would provide people with a helping hand that would allow them to take control of their life and once again be productive and able to provide for themselves and their families. At that time many families were forced to rely on government funding in order to pay their utilities, mortgage or rent, provide food and clothing for their families. While welfare is meant to be a short term solution to helping people while they find work, many people are requiring it for longer periods. Each state has their own set of rules for which people
Welfare is a federally funded program that provides health care, food stamps, child care assistance, unemployment, cash aid, and housing that is under the umbrella of TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). Per Welfare Information, eligibility is determined by net income, family size, and any crisis situation such as: pregnancy, homelessness, and unemployment. TANF also requires the recipient to obtain employment within two years of receiving help (2014). A majority of the monies that support Welfare come from taxes paid by the working class and donations from private companie...
Being involved with the department of social services can be an extremely overwhelming experience to families. There are many aspects of the processes families go through that are unaware to the general public. To gain insight into the child welfare field and the role child welfare social workers play, Heather Makulowich and I interviewed Wanda Phillips on October 4th, 2013.
There are many different career fields you can go into as a social worker: from mental health, drug and alcohol abuse all the way to child welfare. Child welfare is my primary target when I become a social worker. I feel that I will have the biggest impact if I help the kids out that will be creating our future world. If I can help the kids of the next generation then maybe my influence will help more than just those few kids I see every day. Plus ever since I can remember people told me I need to be doing a job that helps children. I want to be able to make a difference in the community, and if I can help the kids, then I know I’ll be helping the community. Being a student at Wilmington College will help me fulfill these values and skills, but the thing that

The number of people on welfare has been dropping since the early 1990's. Just because you get a job does not guarantee you will go off welfare. Many jobs are low paying and low skilled. These are sometimes the only jobs welfare recipients are qualified for. Programs to train workers are a move in the right direction.
The job of a child welfare worker appears to be a demanding profession that promotes the child’s safety, but also strengthens the family organization around them in order to successfully raise the children. This child welfare workers work in the system known as the Child Protective Services whose initiative is to protect the overall welfare of the child. The short novel From the Eye of the Storm: the Experiences of a Child Welfare Worker by Cynthia Crosson-Tower demonstrates the skills necessary to deal with the practice of social work along with both its challenges and its happy moments. The novel consists of some of the cases involving Tower’s actual career in social work. In reading the book, I was able to experience some of the actual cases in which children dealt with physical and mental abuse from their families that caused them to end up within the system. Also, some of these children had issues in adapting to foster and adoptive families based on the issues they faced earlier in life. As we have learned earlier in the course, the violence that a child experiences early in life has an overall affect on the person they become as they grow into adulthood. When children deal with adverse childhood experiences, they are at a higher risk for abusing drugs and/or alcohol, increased likelihood of abusing their own child or spouse, higher rates of violent and nonviolent criminal behavior, along with several other issues throughout their lifespan.
I would agree that the welfare system is a “broken system”, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that the welfare system needs to be “wiped out” before it can be improved. The welfare system is a large system and within that large system there are parts of the system that works well and there are parts that need additions and changes made to be more effective system with assisting individuals to become self-sufficient. Additionally, the welfare system needs to undergo change to become a more efficient system.
Being raised in a single-parent lower class home, I realize first-hand the need for welfare and government assistance programs. I also realize that the system is very complex and can become a crutch to people who become dependent and complacent. As a liberal American I do believe that the government should provide services to the less fortunate and resources to find work. However, as able-bodied citizens we should not become complacent with collecting benefits and it is the government’s job to identify people who take advantage of the system and strip benefits from people who are not making efforts to support themselves independently. I will identify errors that exist within the welfare system and several policy recommendations to implement a change that will counteract the negative conditions that currently exist.
People with various degrees are finding it harder to get jobs where they would like to work. Even the increased rate of layoffs for the tech industry, which usually include packages for an estimated amount of time off, has risen as well. There are programs that assist these situations, such as welfare. “The Welfare Act of 1996 was designed to move people from welfare to jobs. According to a letter to the Chicago Tribune, once they got jobs, they lost public assistance,” said Arloa Sutter, executive director of Breakthrough Urban Ministries.
“In Hawaii, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, D.C., welfare pays more than a $20-an-hour job, and in five additional states it yields more than a $15-per-hour job” (Tanner). Some jobs like police officers or elementary schools starting salary is less than a 15 dollar an hour job so when the two are compared, it does not make sense for people to want to risk thier life or struggle to teach kids that plan to live like their parents off the welfare system and do not see any necessity in learning, when the government will give the same amount of money or more for doing
I have chosen social work as a profession because of my passion to help others. I want to make a difference in someone’s life and help them through the problems they are having. Whether the client needs counseling, guidance, or advocacy I want to be the person to help them. My drive for helping others and motivation to change social policies for the better is why I have chosen social work as my future profession.
Crackle: And you obviously don't understand that many individuals who are supported by welfare actually do have the resources to get a job. They just don't care enough to get out of their houses to finally look for one! These people are just freeloading off hardworking, responsible individuals who tried their best in school and their hardest to look for a job. Those on welfare have no motivation at all, and are putting a giant hole into the government's pockets. If the government didn't spend so much time making sure these lazy people get their nice unearned dollars, we could have a nice free market economy! Those working and rich can use the money the government doesn't take away from them to actually give employment to these undeserving people!
Exactly, they wouldn’t. Although some people are using the welfare system correctly, trying to get themselves back on their feet again and go get a job, there is also people abusing the system with no intent to go get a job. There is no telling exactly what those percentages are, but it is common knowledge that some are using welfare money to fund drug cartels and collect welfare monthly without the mindset to try and get a job. As mentioned earlier, welfare is addicting, once you start you don 't want to stop because its easy and you don 't have to work. This in particular sets an example for the children of the parents/parent on welfare. The vicious cycle continues as the child follows in their parent’s footsteps of abusing welfare without the intent to get a
There are times in my future professional career as a social worker; I will experience personal values or ethics conflicts with clients. Being able to realize my own personal ethics or values, understanding difficulties that may arise as I work with the client, and situations that would cause me to question being able to be objective and professional in working with the client, will help me later on in my profession. One situation that may arise in my future professional career that would lead to me experiencing personal ethics or values conflicts would be working with an HIV+ male who admits to not having “safe sex” because he doesn’t like the way condoms feel.
