Summarize the reasoning given by John Winthrop for why humankind is separated into economic and political classes. According to John Winthrop, humankind is separated into political and economic classes. During the colonial era there was a large barrier between the rich and poor. Since the Puritans had a strong belief in religion, many thought that the social classes were part G-d’s plan. Winthrop explained that the reason for social divisions were that G-ds wisdom created the variety and differences in the creatures. Also, that they were created to be rich or poor in the glory of His power. The differences in humans were created for the preservation and good of mankind (Winthrop par. 2). for the social classes in colonial New England. According to Winthrop, despite class divisions (or perhaps because of them) how should humans treat each other? John Winthrop believed that despite the class divisions, humans should still treat one another as equals. Even though one might live a completely different lifestyle, he or she still deserves mutual respect. According to John Winthrop “it appears plainly that no man is made more honorable than another” (Winthrop par. 4). Despite the social classes that were in place, the Puritans did not respect anyone differently. They felt that everyone was created in G-d’s image and was placed on this Earth for a reason. What does Winthrop mean by suggesting that New England is like a “city on a hill”? What does he feel is the responsibility of all New Englanders. Many Puritans including John Winthrop stated that New England was like a “city on a hill.” It was designed to be a place to look up too. Unlike anywhere else in the world, people could come to New England for religious and social tolerance. Even though some were ranked lower others, respect was mutual. Their colony was made as an example for the world. John Winthrop stated, “we must uphold a familiar commerce together in all meekness, gentleness, patience, and liberality” (Winthrop par. 7). The Puritans created the Massachusetts Bay Colony based on the teachings of the bible. Unlike many other places in the world, they were tolerant towards those who had different beliefs. The Puritans were group of people who set off on a journey to create a colony unlike anywhere else in the world.
On his way to the New World, aboard the Arabella in 1630, John Winthrop, Puritan leader of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, spoke of the plan that he had in store for the colony. He preached that there would be equality in the new colony and that they " must be knit together in this work as one man." He spoke about the importance of community in the colony that was vital for the survival of the colony. His statements made on the Arabella are to the ideas in the Articles of Agreement, which compiled in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1636. In the Articles of Agreement, the community was to contain forty familiesrich and poor. In the Articles of Agreement, the concern for comfort and quality of life (for families) is outlined. They again put emphasis on the importance of unity in the colony and they also express that social classes do not determine what a person is. In Connecticut, the colonists set up regulations for wages and price; these rules were made to include poor settlers in trading and the economy by keeping the prices in the colony "fair." There may not be two more contrasting characters of early America then Thomas Morton and John Winthrop. Morton was nicknamed, "Leader of Misrule" while Winthrop was seen as the "model of [a] perfect earthly ruler" (147). These two figures not only help settle a new land, they also had firsthand knowledge of each other. They are not two people that lived years apart from each other but rather they lived concurrently. With two such polarizing people living in a small new land, there was bound to be at least one disagreement. We are fortunate to have writings from each of these two fascinating men. One can't help but be thoroughly entertained when reading the words that each man left behind. Morton was the rebellious and raucous and Winthrop was the conservative preacher. Each had different ideas and ideals for what America was to become. Their two opinions could not differ much more from the other but they both weren't quite right. It seems that America has found a middle ground. Perhaps these two help set the path to where we stand now.
In the early twentieth century, scholars gain a deeper understanding of the ideology behind those who partook in the American Revolution. People’s motivations throughout the American Revolution are a result of their desire for a new society that is not based on the old world’s standards of monarchy, privilege, and social hierarchy. Likewise, people want a society in the new world to determine one’s status based on one’s abilities, efforts, and talents and to characterize equality. A meritocracy, not monarchy become prevalent in the new world’s society, and one’s family’s reputation, wealth, and titles are no longer important. Therefore, colonists rebuke the old world system, which was questioned throughout the American Revolution. Wood explains that “republic individuals were no longer destined to be what their fathers were” (Wood 99). Economic injustice and oppression occur because someone benefits from them. It is in the interest of someone to create and perpetuate oppressions (pg. 17). If these groups of people that are oppressed were not pitted against one another, an uprising of phenomenal proportions could occur. This is exactly what the rich, white, male, Christian, heterosexual able-bodied society (a.k.a.: The Norm) does not want to happen! Racism, sexism, and classism are necessities for the survival of The Norm.
There were a myriad of differences between Great Britain and her American colonies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but these differences can be divided into three basic categories: economic, social, and political. The original American settlers came to the colonies for varied reasons, but a common trait among these settlers was that they still considered themselves British subjects. However, as time passed, the colonists grew disenfranchised from England. Separated from the king by three thousand miles and living in a primitive environment where obtaining simple necessities was a struggle, pragmatism became the common thread throughout all daily life in the colonies. It was this pragmatism that led the colonists to create their own society with a unique culture and system of economics and politics.
In his essay “Land of Opportunity” James W. Loewen details the ignorance that most American students have towards class structure. He bemoans the fact that most textbooks completely ignore the issue of class, and when it does it is usually only mentions middle class in order to make the point that America is a “middle class country. This is particularly grievous to Loewen because he believes, “Social class is probably the single most important variable in society. From womb to tomb, it correlates with almost all other social characteristics of people that we can measure.” Loewen simply believes that social class usually determine the paths that a person will take in life. (Loewen 203)

John Winthrop and Benjamin Franklin were both leaders in their time. They had very different views on common issues, which is very apparent in the works used in the document provided for this paper. The two men had differences in topics such as; logical thinking, religion, and views on government control. Winthrop delivered his sermon A Model of Christian Charity, in hopes of encouraging his shipmates to establish a truly spiritual community abroad. Almost fifty years later, a Puritan named Mary Rowlandson, daughter of a wealthy landowner and wife of a minister, wrote A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, describing her 11-week captivity by native Indians after an attack on Lancaster. Rowlandson recounts her story with heroism and appreciation for God. Although John Winthrop and Mary Rowlandson were in entirely different situations when composing their literary works, both writings reflect many of the same ideals that characterize the Puritan mind, such as the belief in God's mercy, the acceptance of one's condition in life, and the importance of a strong community.
John Locke is a seventeenth century philosopher who believed that government should be based around the people rather than the power of one person. Equality and property were two factors that Locke considered to be the key to a great society. Locke begins his writings with a discussion on individual property and how each man body is his own property. In distinction to the early eighteenth century, the small groups of integral Puritans families dominated the economic, military, and political leadership of New England. The Puritans agreed that the church composed many families and wasn’t isolated people. The Puritan family was the major unit of production in the economic system each family member expected an economically useful benefit and the older children worked in some family industries, trending gardens, forcing animals, rotating wool, and protecting their younger brothers and sisters. Wives needed to supervise servants and apprentices to keep their financial accounts, enlightened crops, and to display goods. The Puritans had faith in the larger community that had a compelling duty to secure the families and to see their functions.
Thomas Paine lived in a time period in America where there was much talk about independence from Britain. Although there was still debate on whether independence should be put forward or whether better representation could satisfy the wants of the people, Thomas Paine wrote his pamphlet, Common Sense in order to bring common people closer to the side of independence. In his pamphlet Paine broke up his argument into four sections including Of the origin and design of government in general, Of monarchy and hereditary succession, Thoughts on the present state of American affairs, and Of the present ability of America. These four sections lay out Paine’s point of view and his views on what he believed the American Revolution should be about.
During the 1700’s it was becoming clear that history was changing literature. Writers from this time period could see the way Americans were being treated and wrote stories as a push for independence. In gaining independence everyone fled to America to become free from Britain, our “mother country.” The migration of people created what is known as a melting pot in America. Without history changing literature there would’ve been no actual declaration of independence because so many writers wouldn’t have written about what Britain did to the colonies.
