In Aquinas Selections from, “Summa Theologica” he wants us to understand that the nature of the universe is infinite. He talks about how there are different meaning to words that can be used to describe things. In the Selections from Summa Theologica it says, “whose power is to signify his meaning, not by words only (as man also can do), but also by things themselves.” Aquinas is trying to explain that the universe offers us multiple ways on putting meanings to words. I understood that the universe allows us to have different words that can have different meanings to them. In the Selections from Summa Theologica it says, “The knowledge of god is naturally implanted in all. Therefore the existence of god is self-evident.” This shows how the humans think. Humans are minimalistic in the way that just because we are naturally implanted with the existence of god, we know that he is real. We don’t think further on and ask other questions that might question the existence of god. Like the example that Aquinas gives in the selections of the existence of god. The word god means that there is a creator that makes things possible, and it exists. Though it cannot be proven we are naturally integrated with the word and its meaning. The nature of humans is minimalist because humans only use their basic knowledge. Humans limit their minds to knowing more answers to things, like the existence of god. Instead of humans going on beyond their knowledge they conform themselves with the smallest answer possible. In order for humans to be happy they must accept and understand that the existence of god cannot be proven, but there are ideas that can be used to accept the possibility that god does exist. Words are powerful and can have multiple meanings which help us describe many things and understand how things work and why they
It is no coincidence that Aquinas is so widely regarded at one of the most brilliant christian theologians. I would agree that it makes much more sense that God can not be imagined or thought of. There in lies the mystery of God, and what he is transcends a mind and intellect that he created. It is only with a combination of this logic rooted in faith that we can truly know that God exists through the effects of his omniscience, and all that he has created.
In the first part, Aquinas states that the existence of god is not self-evident, meaning that reason alone without appealing to faith can give a good set of reasons to believe. To support this claim, Aquinas refers to “The Argument of Motion”, proposing that:
The difference between absolutism and objectivism is that where objectivists believe that there are universal moral principles in which people of all ethical backgrounds and cultures have the validity to follow, absolutists believe that there are underlying values within these beliefs that strictly cannot ever be over-ridden, violated or broken under any circumstances (REF). Furthermore, while absolutists believe in this notion that moral principles are ‘exception-less’, objectivists strongly follow the notion that life is situational and that we as humans have to adapt accordingly to the variables that arise, take them into account, and then make a decision accordingly (REF). Within this introduction of variables applicable to any situation, it is therefore believed that each moral principle must be weighed against each other to produce the best possible outcome, and this is where the overriding of values occurs in an objectivists view, and where an absolutist would disregard these circumstances.

One is that both theories believe that there had to have been a starting point to the universe. They both believe that it was created for a reason and that there will eventually be an endpoint. St. Aquinas believes that everything is constantly changing, and that for the change to start there must have been something to make the change happen. Medieval philosophy is the synthesis of philosophy and religion, or revelation. In Ibn Tufayl’s Hayy Ibn Yaqzan, Hayy is a perfect example of how reason and revelation are used to determine the ways of the world. While trying to determine if the world was created or eternal, Hayy reasons that he cannot resolve this question. Reason cannot prove that the universe was created or eternal. However, he determines that no matter what the origin of the world, “the world must have a non-corporeal Cause” (Tufayl, 2009, pg. 131). Hayy supports this conclusion by first stating that if the world was created in time, then a creator that is not created must be the Cause. Next, he supports his conclusion by stating if the world is eternal, then the universe must have an infinite force that causes the motion of the universe. Lastly, Hayy supports his conclusion by establishing characteristics of the first Cause that is behind either the creation or infinite motion of the universe. These characteristics include a non-physical body, eternal being, infinite perfection, knowledge, and goodness. In this paper, I will first discuss Hayy’s conclusion of why there must be a first Cause if the world was created. I will then discuss Hayy’s conclusion of why there must be a first Cause if the world is eternal. Lastly, I will discuss Hayy’s conclusion of the characteristics that this first Cause must contain.
Instinctually, humans know that there is a greater power in the universe. However, there are a few who doubt such instinct, citing that logically we cannot prove such an existence. St. Thomas Aquinas, in his Summa Theologica, wrote of five proofs for the existence of God. The Summa Theologica deals with pure concepts; these proofs rely on the world of experience - what one can see around themselves. In these proofs, God will logically be proven to exist through reason, despite the refutes against them.
This is because it’s possible for everything both to exist and not to exist, therefore both possibilities must have been fulfilled at some point. He phrases it in those terms, but I believe his argument is better understood by saying everything which exists must have come into existence, and therefore didn’t exist before that. Since something cannot spontaneously come into existence, he believes, another being gave everything else existence. This is called a “necessary thing,” meaning its existence is necessary for the existence of other things.
