Most colleges are unable to calculate the true statistics for suicide on their campuses. However, increasing awareness of the issue and focusing on treatment and campus outreach programs can help fix this. College for most people is the only time where one setting encompasses all aspects of a person’s life, including social activities, career related or academic activities, health services, etc. and this offers a unique opportunity to address the issue of suicide. There are several ways in which colleges can help address the issue. One way colleges can make a difference is by restricting access to the means of committing suicide, although absolute control of this is not possible. So for example, colleges could ban personal firearms or guns
on campus and in campus buildings and enforce this. Colleges should also make sure that although challenging, the goals that they set for their students aren’t impossible and that the system is fair to help reduce unnecessary stress and pressure. For the problem of funding, colleges should prioritize funding for mental health and counseling programs and services and seek donations from alumni. In addition, some federal legislation, such as the 2004 Grant Lee Smith Memorial Act, can help fund suicide prevention programs on campus. However, even with increased funding, nearly 80% of college students who have committed suicide never sought counseling or treatment. Thus, colleges should increase awareness of their programs by better advertising their resources and should make sure that counseling services are included in the student insurance plans. These counseling programs should determine whether hospitalization for suicidal patients is necessary, but should not ban students with suicidal thoughts from campus as that is helpful to no one and does not solve the problem. These counseling services should strive to rebuild hope and health in these students, rather than focus on prescribing medication. One way counselors can do this is by encouraging students to join a club or group on campus. Research has shown that belonging to a group, such as a sports team, can decrease suicidal behavior. Medication may be appropriate in some cases, but these drugs can be counterproductive because they shift the focus away from modifying behavior and relationships and confronting life stresses. However, an effective solution for suicides on campus cannot rely entirely on individual focused counseling. Rather, the entire college community should share the responsibility and focus on reducing and eliminating college suicide by eliminating the stigma of seeking help, looking out for each other, and supporting one another.

The Signs of Suicide (SOS) program is an educational approach in reducing suicidal behaviors among students. It is school-based preventative program that “incorporates two prominent suicide prevention strategies into a single program by combining curricula to raise awareness of suicide and its related issues with a brief screening for depression and other risk factors associated with suicidal behavior” (D & L., 1999, p. 70). The SOS program offers a series of advantages over the other programs. Besides introducing students with suicide prevention information, “self-screening techniques and peer support establishment are essential attributes to the SOS program” (Aseltine & DeMartino, 2004, p. 446). It can also be implemented with “minimal staff training and that the program does not unduly burden teachers, counselors, or administrative staff” (Aseltine, 2003).
The survey found gender and parents' education level did not seem to provoke suicidal tendencies, but other demographic factors. These other such factors included age, class standing, race/ethnicity, living arrangement, and fraternity/sorority membership. The questionnaire indicated that freshmen and sophomores were more likely to consider suicide than upper-classmen; students of ethnic/racial backgrounds other than White, Black or Hispanic were more likely to have considered suicide; students who lived alone, with friends/roommates, or parents/guardians were more likely than those who lived with a partner or spouse; students who were members of a fraternity/sorority were less likely to have considered suicide. By understanding this support can go to those in need of education and those who are at risk. A young anonymous college freshman tells a story of the depression she faced throughout her first semester of college, through the transition and her roommate issues. Not only did it occur during her first semester, but through her second as well. Unfortunately, the depression overtook her life to the point of her desire to commit suicide. Luckily, she changed her mind in the last second and saved herself (Reachout.com). This young student is not just one of few depressed college students, but she is one of many. Colleges must take more responsibility of mental health issues, like depression, by researching the causes and effects while discovering beneficial treatments that promote the students’ overall well being.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year olds, and the sixth leading cause for 5 to 14 year olds. Suicide accounts for twelve percent of the mortality in the adolescent and young adult group. Young males are more common than young woman suicides. These are only children who followed through with the suicide. For every successful suicide there are fifty to one hundred adolescent suicide attempts. In other words, more than five percent of all teenagers tried to commit suicide, and the number is still rising. It is scary to think that four percent of high school students have made a suicide attempt within the previous twelve months. In a small safe town like Avon, in the Avon High School where you and I practically live, you can see the faces of 22 students that have tried to commit suicide. That is enough to fill a classroom.

According to Webters dictionary “suicide is the act killing oneself on purpose”. It derived from the Latin sui, meaning “self”, and caedere, which means “to kill”. But this is just a definition, because an actual suicide holds different meanings to people such as tragic, shocking, a relief, a cry for help, a shame, heroic, the right choice, punishment, revenge, protest, anger, a mistake, desperate, hurtful and many more. But why do people, like college students who have their entire future ahead of them, simply give up hope and turn their heads away from life and commit suicide. There are several causes of suicide, recent incidents of suicide on college campuses, warning signs from a suicidal. I blame the Constitution and the United States law for not taking any hard initiative on the subject of suicide. I also impose the choice of the media, which is reflecting and portraying suicide towards a wrong direction. However most important questions remain: can the growing epidemic of suicide be solved, what are communities doing about it and what can they do to help?
